Went to the Amphitheatre in Girne last night for the dance show. It was really good, and raising money for good causes.....unfortunately, as seems to be the normal case.......place was less than a quarter full I would say. Such a shame when the dance group had put so much effort in, been practising for a year, and they were excellent, as was the orchestra......if it had only been advertised better it could have raised so much more for 2 very worthy causes.

So, then tonight.....to the castle in Girne for Opera nights. Now, I know opera is not everyone's cup of tea...but, the turnout for these excellent performers was pathetic. The performance was free, within the castle grounds and the performers were just so good. You would pay a fortune to enjoy a night of opera like this one in the UK> Why on earth do these events not get the publicity they need?

Anyway, 2 great nights, rounded off when we came out of the opera, by a superb firework display over the harbour......

You've nailed it one! No publicity by those that normaly sponsor such events, either the Turkish Embassy or the local Belediyesi pretending they are supporting the local community without informing them of what's going on! Shame, but glad you enjoyed yourself/selves!

Well it seems the trend is changing, once upon a time a free event was a full event, seems now some people want something more than just free.

To be honest both friday and saturday was very quiet out,i went to around 15 venues friday and maybe the same on saturday, everywhere quiet.

But your correct about advertising, maybe they think cyprus44 is enough to advertise!

You should have come to Cine Miles in town Saturday night , Mel was singing and the atmosphere was hypnotic people were on the balconies listening and people on the street stopped to listen, was a good night out.

mrsgee,

I couldn't agree more, we went to the castle on Friday evening and the amphitheatre last night, both places a quarter full. Absolutely first class at the castle, you would pay over a £100 to hear them at Covent Garden and it was free!! The concert at the amphitheatre was extremely good and very entertaining. We know the TRNC is

not very good when it comes to advertising but this was pathetic. One small piece in Cyprus Today is not good enough and posters in every village are needed.

Thoroughly enjoyed the opera at the castle last night and it did look pretty full when the singing began.

What a great change it was for a Saturday evening.

We had dinner first at Cafe de Paris, brilliant as usual, then the opera and finally a drink in the harbour.

The entire evening, including drinks, was about 50TL per couple, where else would you have such a great evening for as little as that?

I thought the same as most of you. But I also did wonder 'where are the Brits' at both functions. Maybe they were at Cine Miles - but a very different form of entertainment. - not what we operalovers enjoy as much.

Don't agree you would pay £100 at Covent Garden for the Turksoy folk - they are not CG standard - apart from the bass who should be a fantastic addition to the international scene, even though his height could go against him for some of the roles BUT BUT BUT with thee fabulous settinng of the castle, the star lit sky, the music of great composers - yes that has to be worth something. Or maybe when it is free people think there is a catch. But that is their loss.

As for the dance, very professional indeed and worthy of a far larger audience. Hope cyprus gets it rightt before it is too late. All these facilities and events and in the main 'disinterest' is shown.
