Is there a fish market (what days?) or a supermarket that sells fresh fish?

Hur Deniz he has fish flown in every morning from Turkey - if it needs gutting and cleaning they do it there for you. Great family business - go to the roundabout where you would turn for Lefkosa go across roundabout and they and a few metres on the right hand side very large sign saying Hur Deniz.

I have to admit that since buying my own villa in TRNC and visiting many times I have been astonished at the lack of "fresh fish and especially shell fish" available on the northern side of what is an island. In the south, which I have not visited for a long time you can get every type of prawn, shrimp, tiger prawn, lobster, crab, squid etc etc, so why not in the north. Is it that we have not got any willing or able fishing boats and crews? I have heard a crazy theory that the sea in the straits between TRNC and Turkey is not deep enough for shell fish and other large fish, absolute bs, shell fish survive in almost any depth of water and the conditions of the sea are identical to that in the southern med around Pathos, Larnaca etc.

I am not talking about imported frozen shell fish, but the verrsion that has just been pulled from the shopping basket of the world THE SEA that we are surrounded by. Come on TC's get your act together, there would be in my opinion, a very large market.

Fresh squid is available here from Hur Deniz and very good it is too. Most of the shellfish that you mention are, in fact, imported into the south anyway! Most of these things - fresh lobster, tiger prawns etc - are pretty expensive and I don't see a market for them here on any kind of regular basis. Last time I looked, one of the restaurants on the sea front in Limassol had lobster on the menu at 80 euros a kilo. The only people buying were rich Russians! Unsurprising really.

tonyf....The shell fish here would be the warm water species,if you are looking for "Blues"(Lobster) or Chancre Crab or Spider crab you are in the wrong place........ I was also disappointed having come from Guernsey ,where the sea food is to die for ..............

Is there nowhere then to buy the 'freshest' fish directly from the fishermen? I am sure that they would do much better selling it directly to the public than to the eateries etc.

I have had fish from Hur Deniz and it is OK, however if it is flown in from Turkey then it was probably caught the day/night before and this is not, imo 'fresh fish'.

I too was quite dismayed by the lack of 'fresh' fish. I was sure that I could just go and buy it almost daily from the local fishermen.

perhaps they have not considered it?

You can go to the fishing harbour at Lapta and try the fishermen there but, don't expect any bargains. The guy from Hur Deniz buys most of it.

I understand that this end of the Med is too salty, too stagnant and too warm for many species.

There are fish but there is no real "commercial" fishing in the TRNC, except the fish farms off Famagusta. Shellfish just do not really live in sufficient quantities in this part of the Med, there are lobsters and prawns but in very small numbers.

Think it's a great idea.

Will you be importing wet fish and shell fish not currently available in TRNC?

thanks for the messages of support, I hope to be supplying all types of wet and shell, I am doing a lot of searching around and will visiting trnc to look into what you are all looking for, i will of course keep you posted on my progress and in the meantime if any of you have any ideas suggestions or advice on local supplies it would be much appreciated. I will open a fresh topic on this as well if needed,

MartinD41, I too would not go near for those reasons which is why I aim to do things to the highest standard and will only be supplying fish of the highest quality.

How about jellied eels? Then someone could open a pie, eel and mash shop. Not forgetting the liquor of course!
