I am 44 and live in widnes just outside liverpool.Looking for as much info as possible o n living an working in TRNC.I am an origonal investor in The skyline residence so have always took an interest in the situation on the island.Me and the missus will be visiting next year to see if its as beautiful as everybody says.Is it worth retraining for a trade such as aircon engineer or plumbing etc.....How hard is it to start your own business? Sorry for all the questions just coming out of business partnership so using the situation for a possible change of direction!

So many questions, and unfortunately so many answers, all of which could be different. Also if you are not coming out until next year, the rules willhave changed by then.

Filly, Welcome to Cyprus 44.

Stellastar1 is right the rules can change quite fast.

One thought is a trade that is not quite so strongly needed (i.e. A/c) so that the locals may not fill the need. Why not carry on your current trade you already know some of the problems?

The costs and complexity of setting up a business in North Cyprus are large so be prepared.

Hi filly,

I was over Hilltop 2 weeks ago and nobody working on this blot on the landscape. Was told nobody been working there for over 8 weeks or more.

Sorry if this is not what you wish to hear but I think you have backed a loser there.

Hi Filly,

Think carefully as it is very hard to find work here, the government want locals to be employed wherever possible. Starting a business is costly and their are many pitfalls. This place is sound in many ways but there is much to learn and many are looking for work. Tourism has been at an all time low this year so businesses are suffering. Still not in eu and who knows what the current talks will bring. Monthly wage is low and cost of living is rising but it's a good place to live if you manage to get an income. Best wishes.

what work!!!!!!!! unless you want to work in estate agents 5 or 6 days a week for low pay, many vacancies ask for turkish speaking, flexi hours or job sharing are alien here. if you want to start own business I believe you need 80k to set up but this is returned back to you soon after. Just bring plenty of dosh and slap it in a ytl account and hopefully live off interest. Or sell bric a brac at Chateau Lambousa on Saturdays, there seems to be a lot of expats selling cornish pasties and sausage rolls etc, not as good as Greggs lol. but 3 times the price.

It appears that the TRNC government doesn't want foreigners (other than very very rich ones who build casinos).

From experience of friends, starting a business is a nightmare and unless you can find a Cypriot partner the chances oif doing so are diminishing with every new rule change.

The government did state a couple of months ago they were tightening up immigration rules for those wanting to work to restrict to scarce skills only.

To work as an employee, the employer has to get you work permit which involves money changing hands, medical and more form filling.

Nobody on this forum will give you anything but good advice but in your case I am afraid most will tell you things that you will not wish to hear. Also with construction going into decline shortly, tourism dying on its feet it will be almost impossible to find work with decent pay.

Best way is to come over for a sustained period and check out for yourself before making any sort of decision to your future.

Hi Filly

Welcome to the forum, I dont often post here, but hopefully I will be able to give you some good advice, having set up my own business here some four years ago.

Firstly you have a choice - if you want to take a TC partner it will relieve you of a lot of the problems encountered by foreigners, but of course you must have full trust in your partner as many have fallen foul of these agreements and indeed some have lost everything.

Second if you go on your own you will need to prove that you have at least $100000 in a local bank account free of any encumberances, this will be frozen till your limited company papers are granted, then they will freeze an amount (which seems to vary) of in my case $10000, you will be required to get an accountant, this in itself is tricky, (I am on my second) as they seem to charge in three currencies dollar ytl and GBP, make sure that you know which one they are charging in for each job they do for you, then you have to pay the tax office a fee
