I have seen motion sensors from home security systems attached to the mains power spur of an a/c unit. Good quality a/c units will auto restart after power is restored by movement. You don't need me for this, a good electrician should be able to sort something out for you.

Most aircon come with economy settings ,but most people set the temp to low so it never works .Set the temp to 23/4 at night and the economy will switch on and off at the required temp no need for motion senses.

I'm not sure that motion sensors are the way to go, for 2 reasons:

1. I like to pre-cool my bedroom before I go to bed as it has 3 external walls and a flat roof above. Even with windows wide open the room is a furnace at the end of the day. With a motion sensor I couldn't pre-cool my bedroom, as I wouldn't be in it, moving around.

2. I understand that several chains of hotels in the US have tried these but guests complain about the a/c shutting-down after they fall asleep. I have to say this wouldn't be a problem for me as I have nightmares which disturb me and I often sleep-walk!

Hi Vaughan,

slightly off topic, our bungalow is the same 3 outside walls and a flat roof which is a roof terrace. As you rightly say it's like a furnace during the hot weather. Does anybody know if there is anything you can lay on the roof that would

insulate it from the heat? It would need to be strong enough to walk on and not require any structural work, as we haven't got our deeds yet.

I'm sure most of you have ceiling fans, however its worth looking into a high quality large fan that is positioned above your bed at the correct hight. There is an equation that you need to work out the required position. The better quality fans will offer different length drop rods for high ceilings. Fitted correctly these fans are virtualy silent and you can almost levetate above your bed!. Price arount £100-150 money well spent, and less running of AC units.

msg 7,

My previous house had Tugla bricks dotted around with plywood sheets painted "silver" laid on them, forming an air gap and preventing the sun shining directly on the concrete roof.
