I have just found an old postcard that i brought a few years ago of a damaged Tank . The postcard says it is in the mountains of Kyrenia i am just thinking to myself it might still be there looking at the postcard it looks in reasonable condition ( needs a new track and a bit of panel beating but with a bit of tlc i think i could be in business ) I think there would be a lot of interest to hire the tank out to property owners that are having trouble with there builders imagine turning up to a site meeting in a 40 ton tank think of the advantages in fact i could hire it out to myself the problems i have with my builder . So where is the tank someone must know .

All the best Frank

There is a collection of T34 tanks armoured cars artillary etc in good condition just down from the Turkish landing memorial at Alsancak. More than enough to sort out any builder with a bit of work. Entry is free so maybe you could loan some equipment as well.

If you take the 'back road' over the mountains from St Hilarion Castle to Lapta you pass your tank. It has been securely fixed to the mountain with the help of some concrete now - presumably to stop this 'tourist attraction' from falling into the ravine! My hubby & I stopped and had a good look at it in September, doesn't look like it will be going anywhere any time soon!

Be careful when driving this road... the tank attracts a other road users at times and we always seem to meet them just around a blind bend when they are travelling at speed.... with squeal and swerve and an "oh my God!"

It's a great route for looking down onto the villages and coast.. almost like being in a light aircraft at times... if it was in the UK they would be nose to tail all weekend long!

This is a brilliant ride with loads of places to stop for photos.

Follow the road from St Hilarion, as Maggie says above you can drop off the road on a dirt track to Lapta but best continue to the T-junction and go straight across to Kozan restaurant for refreshments and admire the view. Never eaten there a bit expensive but probably paying for scenery.

After refreshment come out of rest. and turn left down into Karsiyaka. We do the run at least twice a year and with visitors because of the changing scenery.

If you have time you could go down the south face of mountain, turning right from rest. You can go through Kozan, turn left and travel through all the villages to Bogazkoy. Again a superb trip.

All of these roads have now been tarmaced which to us is a shame as it has taken away some of the fun.

I do Know people who are scared of heights and refuse to use these roads, there are some serious drop offs. You have been warned!!!!

Enjoy!

Extra warning.

We did this road one winter day and a fog bank dropped onto mountains and had difficulty seeing.

Turned onto one of the military roads and before we knew it were confronted with a huge fence, a man pointing a gun at us and a squad of dogs behind him. Suffice to say I did a quick hand brake turn and got out of there!!!!

So again if there is rain about and heavy cloud, not a good idea to venture along if you are of feint heart.
