Best informative post in ages. I couldn't work out whether or at what time it maybe visible from Cyprus, a shooting 'star', but now too much light pollution in Girne to see anything clearly, however, worth a look. Any further information? Richard

Hi Brinsley, Here's some info from http://www.space.com/12067-asteroid-2011-md-close-earth-flyby-june-27.html The asteroid will make its closest approach at 1:14 p.m. EDT (1714 GMT) on June 27 and will pass just over 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometers) above the Earth's surface, NASA officials say. At that particular moment, the asteroid — which scientists have named 2011 MD — will be sailing high off the coast of Antarctica, almost 2,000 miles (3,218 km) south-southwest of South Africa. To see what else's out there try this link... http://www.space.com/11093-photos-asteroids-deep-space-rocks.html 1 of 36 Asteroids, some very big ones too :-0 Sleep tight, they should all miss, so they say Navek

Navek There's an astronomical society based in the South which, in the past, replied to my previous questions, however, their site seems to be under 'repair'. Damn! Richard

have a search for elenin or nibiru.............. not sure if they one & the same thing but lots of speculation all over the web. I cant make my mind up but its supposed to be responsible for alot of earthquakes at the mo & there are loads of volcanoes going off but hardly a thing in the MSM (main stream media) Then look out for the film trailer called "Melacholia" Somethings going on but hard to tell what.

Having read the articles posted by Navek:- "The asteroid will make its closest approach at 1:14 p.m. EDT (1714 GMT) on June 27" (SPACE.COM) "For several hours prior to its closest approach, 2011 MD will be visible in moderately-large amateur telescopes. But despite its close approach, actually seeing this asteroid will not be an easy task. ......You will need to have access to an excellent star atlas, and because it will be moving so rapidly you'll also need the very latest data from the Minor Planet Center to track its precise course against the background stars." (SPACE.COM) "You probably won't be able to see it, however. Because of its size and how fast it will travel, only 'moderately large amateur telescopes' will be able to catch it. And even then you'd need an "excellent star atlas." (NBC). So you will not see it.

The asteroid will make its closest approach at 1:14 p.m. EDT (1714 GMT) on June 27. That's 20.14 TRNC time. So if you feel a rumble just after that, you'll know what it was ))) Navek

Space Weather News for June 24, 2011 http://spaceweather.com ASTEROID FLYBY: Newly-discovered asteroid 2011 MD will pass only 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) above Earth's surface on Monday, June 27th. NASA analysts say there is no chance the space rock will strike Earth. Nevertheless, the encounter is so close that Earth's gravity will sharply perturb the asteroid's trajectory. Details at http://spaceweather.com .

I am confused, I thought it was 1.14p.m,. - or is it a.m.? In which case I could go look for a shooting star which I would not have seen lunch time. Help!
