Can't see it happening when there is a perfectly adequate dual carriageway over the mountain.

'Let's forget the desperately needed water pipeline from Turkey - let's build an impressive tunnel!'

Voice from the floor: 'What about the pensioners?'

'What about the pensioners, indeed, Mr. Mustafa - we must build, but we must build surely!'

If I may borrow an oft used quote, Ms. Pollymarples: 'You couldn't make it up!'

Well I think it is a good idea, especially if it is going to start in Catalkoy. Most countries with mountains have tunnels.

It is safer for heavy vehicles than travelling up and down mountain roads and it will take less time to get to Nicosia

from the east of Kyrenia. It will create jobs for some, the down side is the noise and disruption whilst it is being built. Like newlad I think there are all sorts of things going on behind the scenes, somebody knows something we don't know.

If reducing one side of the mountain range to gravel and carting it away in lorries continues is there not likely to be another cutting through the mountain in the same area as the existing mountain road long before any tunnel can be completed ? Perhaps the spoil is needed to build the tramway from Girne, the cable car sites to and from St Hilarion, a second runway for the promised national airline, and the base tracks for the envisaged national rail train network ? In the interim can Alsancak please have some lorry loads of gravel to fill in all the holes and cracks of the tracks which were once tarmac roads ?

even if it was built it would cave in after a few months? if they used the builders out here?

then just look a the dual carriageway over the mountain going up is ok if your using a donkey but a but bouncy in a car with all the creases in the road.. get the pollyfiller out...
