Started off with Ruddles best Bitter £1.60 pint and it was superb, a couple pf weeks ago I laughed at someone waxinjg lyrical about it but I am now a convert, no one else stocks it so the John Smiths got a hammering.

For whomever doesn't read the Sunday Times, it had a small paragraph warning NOT to drink alcohol called:- Eagleblow Vodka and Gin, Raki 7 and Mr Burdon Whiskey, all made in Northern Cyprus. It is full of poisonous chemicals purposely put into it; a huge amount of this stuff was shipped over to Turkey, where thus far, it has killed five people........the latest, a young Russian man........

Msg 5 I'm sure someone will find and post the link but it was PROVED that liqueur made in Northern Cyprus WAS NOT the cause of peoples deaths - before you do untold damage to an already struggling economy MsGarnet please get your fatcs straight!

from NCFP & Cyprus Today

"Drinks in the clear over tourist deaths – Tests prove TRNC produced alcohol did not kill Russian trio. Tests revealed the trio died after drinking Mister Burdon labelled whisky and rakı, which contained triple the accepted limits of methyl alcohol, during a boat trip in Bodrum. These drinks are not produced in the TRNC.,"

I don't write the Travel Section - page 2, of the Sunday Times, 26/6/11, so can only say - I took the paragraph at its word.

I am aware not everything one reads is true - I have been written about, and even though interviewed by a newspaper, and a magazine who did a two page spread - both articles were larded with unsubstantiated poetic licence.

Maggie and Bernie - one realises politeness isn't a requisite on this board, but would remind you I had no more reason to disbelieve the Sunday Times than for you to believe your source, kindly don't shoot the messenger! My posting was engendered by public concern; I do have a huge extended family connection in TRNC - their welfare is my concern as much as that of everyone else living there.

MsGarnet

If I was rather abrupt in my posting this morning I apologise - I really didn't mean to be rude and can only put it down to being tired & grumpy and needing more coffee!

I know there's a lot wrong with this country and the Government could do a lot more to improve things, but having read several articles recently on the 'poisoned vodka etc' story I just thought it would do more damage to the tourist industry/local economy if people are put off buying drinks because of it.

Have a nice day!

Maggie and Bernie - my turn to apologise - I am suffering tennis elbow as we speak (not that I can remember when I last handled a racquet)! and the pain is driving me dotty at times, so I think I was projecting somewhat.

To be honest, I left immediately after I posted, to go shopping for the day, and a couple of times when I was out, thought to myself, I could have couched my post in better terms as I TOTALLY understand and concur, with what you said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our family in TRNC are a large part of the economy there, as well as contributing enormously to it - and though I can't, for health reasons, get back for a while - when I read that small article, I thought - gosh - how come no-one has mentioned it? so am pleased to read, the notion the methanol laced alcohol came from TRNC has been disabused...
