Bought Turkcell 3G last week after being on dial up connection and the difference was amazing. However we now seem to be getting a few problems in that it sometimes will not connect despite the green light being on the modem. Anyone else had similar problems?

Will Turkcell 3G allow you to make calls on Skype or is it blocked ?.

i too have the turkcell 3G. sometimes very slow also. But having phoned turkcell they said it would take a few months for everything to settle down. İ think they are having a few teething problems, which is quite normal i think as this is a new system.

Hi CJtill - I have to disconnect the modem and then reconnect it everytime I start it up. I'm sure that things will be sorted out once Turkcell get their head round things. Other than that - very happy with it.

720 YTL a year, and no other cost incurred? Where does the modem attach - is it to your mobile?

sportstar I haven't progressed yet to trying Skype but I am going to try in the next few days.

I am glad it is not just me that is having problems as I thought it was maybe our computer connection as we have had problems with the usb ports.

I have also had to disconnect the modem and reconnect a couple of times and then the signal seems quite low but I guess it is early days yet but otherwise I am really happy with it.

Truffles - you connect to your computer but I believe if you have a blackberry you can connect direct to that.

Use Skype all time and the quality is the same as previous internet connection, sometimes better than others, there is also a connecting lead for your phone so you should be able to take it with you if your phone has internet capability (in theory anyway, haven't tried it), also your laptop. The modem is the size of a very small mobile. Absolutely no complaints about the service.

I think they are about to roll out a wireless network solution to augment the current offering which only works with one laptop/pc at a time...

Possibly a daft question, but if you've got 3G broadband can't you then go on line and download from BBC i player ITV player/ Sky player(if you subscribe) and get all your TV requirements without having to get a satellite dish?

I got 3G on saturday and so far I am delighted with it! It doesn't constantly cut out and lose the connection like my old provider used to do. It downloads probably about twice as fast as before. I've only had it 3 days but so far I have absolutely no complaints!

Hi Lincsman Yes you can watch Sky over the internet. We have the Slingbox system set up at our daughters house in Uk and watch it over broadband here. We had to upgrade our broadband connection but it is very watchable

I found that if signal was a bit weak it would go to GPRS, which is a lot slower. The best thing I found was to change the network settings (do this before connecting). Change from UMTS preferred to UMTS only. UMTS is faster than GPRS.

If you are having trouble getting a decent signal for UMTS, buy a USB extension lead from any PC shop (max cable length should be 5mtrs). You will be surpised just how much better the signal can be a few feet from where you are using it.

Did a signal test in a bungalow almost opposite Club Simena. In an attic room and was getting 3-4 bars and a speedtest at between 700kbps and 1mbps.

I would suggest if any one wants to use skype, to download from Apple store the application called Fring. It is free.

You will have at once Skype, MSN Messenger, ICQ, SIP, Google talk, Yahoo chat etc.. It works great.

But be aware that Turkcell is charging for skype and google talk calls. Had a bad surprise as I received my last invoice.

Had to pay about 200 ytl on top of my package and when I complained, they told me I should stop using Skype for calls.

My I point out that I use Skype on 3G (via PC) and it does not cost anything extra. I can only guess that Ackim is referring to using it on a mobile phone on a package.

So until I find out any different. Skype to Skype calls on a PC using 3G card is still free.

Hi there my mum and dad live over there they own the shed company near the power station karen and mick lane and most of you will prob know them, the reason i've joined the forum is because my mum has just got a 3g modem and she has problems when using skype when she is in the valley i am fairly clued up with the uk mobile network setup as its part of my job but dont have a clue on the turkcells so i'm hoping some one might be able to answer some Q's i have

1. were about is the 3g transmitter and how many do they have (i used to live over there so i'm ok with town/village names)

2. Do the USB dongles have any manufacture details on them they look identical to the old ones from three over here in the Uk.

3. Does any one live near the power station that uses 3g and has no probs with skype.

4. Andy p you mentioned that you can select UMTS always is this option found under tools?

5. has any one tried an external aerial and if so what type i.e. 2db/12db gain

thanks in advance

1. The nearest transmitter to them is at the Acapolco Hotel (well just across the road).

2. The Modem is a ZTE MF622. The same as "3" use in the UK.

3. I live in Arapkoy

4. Disconnect from the network. Go into Settings - Network Settings and select UMTS Only. Then Click Apply. Close software and re-open and connect.

5. Not tried external aerial as cannot get them here. I have had a look at these and would get one if I was going to UK. Best ones I have seen so far is here http://www.panorama-antennas.com/shop/3g_cards/ZTE/MF622/

I am in Esentepe. 3G works better than any other system I have had. Can listen to Radio 2, phone on Skype, upload, download, not restricted to sitting in corner in garden, works everywhere.

Took Andy's advice and forced the connection, and it's fantastic.

Hi to all

I changed to 3g and so far i have found it better than my original ISP, ( and no downtime...) I have tried it as far as Karisyaka and got a 2bar signal.

the following setting helps - use the 'only umts' option (or umts preferred if you are getting no connection)

Get a USB extension cable for the modem, as it makes a difference where the modem is positioned, avoid corners (the steel reinforcing rods used in houses do affect signal strength).

If you have a computer/laptop which only has USB1 sockets this will slow things down, it should work but the speeds rarely go above 50-70 kbps.

Using a mobile phone close to the modem, causes 3G to disconnect occasionally.

For the 'tech minded' look at the modem default settings in windows XP - adjusting these helps.

If you still have an old dial up modem card in your computer, this can cause conflict with the 3G.

Apologise to 'AndyP' - don't want to upstage you - hope this helps

thanks Andy, i knew you would know just got my mum to switch to umts only and she does not get even 1 bar in the house so i have now proved why Skype keeps breaking up it was because it was using the gprs network rather then the 3g network she's going to borrow a laptop with good batteries and take a walk up to the road and see if she gets 3g and how many bars she's going to need about 2-3 bars for those directional antenna's to really work well but if she does she's going to pick up the outdoor directional mast mountable one for £79.99 and that should do it once mounted near the top of the valley. that should give every one else on the forum an indication as to whether or not they are worth investing in.

cheers for all your help

Hi Greengate

Nice to have someone else's input on the techy stuff with 3g. I spend most of my days dealing with questions about this.

Would be great to get feedback with regards to the external aerial. Please post back on here or email me with any results.

We asked in our local '3' shop, they told us that it wouldn't work in TRNC.

My 3G mobile modem is working very slowly ....I have it set to UMT but still very slow. A recent visitor from Norway remarked that it was exceptionally slow and very expensive compared to Norway....that got me thinking...considering that Norway is one of THE most expensive countries in the world! (I am not sure if I have installed the acceleration program correctly)

Now I read that the problem may be with turkcell and not with the programming of my laptop. Is it just a matter of patience and wait until Turkcell sorts out the problems?

Hi to all (3g again)

To glw215 - a friend of mine bought a 3g modem over from the Uk - it would not work, however the model No. was different to turkcell 3g here (which i understand relates to the software used, and locks it to a network) - so don't take the chance. (although this may be ironed out in future models)

I am also looking at directional antennas which do help with signal strength, i will be investigating this when i return to the Uk (unless someone knows if they can be purchased in the TRNC)

I found Skype works well with 3G, however you will more than likely be charged extra when calling mobiles (see skype charges)

Also try to avoid placing the modem close to an external PC speaker or cable, it distorts the sound quality and can cause the connection to drop off line.

There is also a potential problem with receiving UK radio/TV over 3G here, as your ISP is 'KKTC Turkell' - sites offering radio etc do not seem to accept this a valid UK IP address.

Hi

I've been reading through all the info re Turkcell 3G and wondered if anyone has any feedback re the external ariels ? I am not a techie but we are moving further into the Karpaz soon and I have tried the connection there and it's dreadful. If any sort of booster/ariel would help we'd go for it.

We moved over to Turkcell 3G a few weeks ago when we lost the Extend service in our area and it's been great. Much better than Extend in fact as the connection was lost really frequently before but since going to 3G we've had no loss of connection at all. Only problem has been poor Skype connection at busy times. No problem during the day but evenings are difficult which I am told is due to bandwidth.

Any help would be very welcome.

Thanks

I have been put off Turkcell 3g by a friend who tells me it will slow down considerably once more people get connected and it may be better to sit it out with Extend for the time being. Any views on this please?

Was using 3g in UK and it worked really well and fast. How many people does it take to slow it down? More peole in 1 town in the UK than live in the TRNC, so I cannot see a problem.

I fact mine just keeps getting faster not slower.

The quoted 7mbs speed of 3G is shared per 'cell'. In very simple terms one person using the cell would get 7mbs. 2 would get 3.5mbs, 7 would get 1mbs each etc etc.

Comparing with the UK does not really work, as greater density allows the provider to place more cells per given unit of area. What matters as far as indivduals speed goes is the ratio of concurrent users to a given cell at any given time and probably more than anything the kind of use of the other people you share the connection with. If all they are doing is a bit of email and web browsing then their impact on other users sharing that cell would very very small. If however they are constantly downloading compressed data for hours at a time then a single user doing that on the same cell as you will have your max 7mbs to 3.5mbs. 2 such users would reduce your max connection to 2.3mbs and so on and so on.

I've just signed up to Turkcell 3G after years of using SC, IC and Extend. I have very little good to say about either of the earlier providers but one day of using Turkcell has been a revelation. Quite simply, it works! The speed is pretty good. For instance, downloading a pdf newspaper came down at 150KBs - more than 3 times the Extend speed. More importantly to me, it doesn't break. By this for example, I mean when using a messenger service with Extend it was necessary to reconnect every few minutes. With Turkcell, not a single problem in several hours use.

An you don't need a satellite dish or box on the roof!
