Hello,

i just wondered what items i should bring over in my luggage Im going over to an unfurnished appartment to carry out a snagging visit .Im in TRNC for 3 days so have plenty of room in luggage for extras. Was thinking of taking small petrol generator if airline allows it however unsure of what other items are worth bringing with me without customs imposing heavy duties .

Hi Seaview,

If you do bring it out make sure that all parts that are petrol related are DRY and it has been well ventilated as othewise the airline will probably say no for good safety reasons.

You are asking board members to condone your breaking the law; we all know that you should declare goods you import to any country (if most of us do is another matter).

Everything you bring in is due customs duty of around 30%. Obviously, if you do not declare you will also be fined and loose the goods!!!!!!!

Why do you need a generator? If you have no electric in home OK but power cuts are so few and usually of short duration you really do not need one. Unless you have it in a suitcase then I would guarantee you will be asked to open the box.

As Tom implies, that is the legalities of the situation!!

Don't bring a genny... or anything with a petrol motor

Kitchen appliances maybe as these can be expensive... but don't smuggle big time. Most things can be bought here. The luggage allowances are not that good.

If the items are not new i.e blankets, drills, curtainrails etc, I do not think you have to pay tax. Which airport are you landing at ?

seaview

what ever you bring make sure you hide it in your case.

we did bring a petrol strimmer out and had no probs, its just luck.

luggage allowance has been reduced recently, so remember to weigh everything so

you don't get any excess baggage charges.

Do not believe it. If you are bringing old items for use in a home then you may still have to pay tax. You are taking money from the local economy!

The only way to avoid tax liability legally is if you move here permanently and are not going to work.

We have been over a few times now landing at Larnaca and manage to take over quite a lot of stuff but weigh your cases before you go.

beware with monach. we booked through travel republic. luggage included and 2 sets of golf clubs. when we checked in they told us we hadn't paid to put the cases on the plane, we had paid to put the golf clubs on and we had 20kg allowance but not to put them on the plane it cost an extra £22 each case return. angry doesn't cover it. they tried to say we had not clicked the button for luggage how i said when it was done by a travel agent. tha snotty cow then said it is a new thing and all airlines are doing it. including ryanair. not so said my sister in law who had travelled with ryanair the previous week. if this is true we should have been informed of the changes. just another money making racket. no meal , will not be using them ever again. piss poor service. all for £249 an extra £22 for each case and £15 each way for the golf cases. never again. we have now booked with kthy. free luggage , free golf bags. and a meal on the plane. get to pick our own seats. and it's nearer. beware.

If you come through RoC you may still encounter same problems with customs.

i came out in summer and booked with monarch myself .i did pay suicase etc but also i paid for 2 sets of gold clubs at £15 because it gave me extra 2ok of luggage per bag .i filled the golf carrier bags with excess bits and bobs and essentials to kit out appartment.

did this as it was cheaper than paying excess luggage at extra £7 per kilo

I'd suggest you bring out a smallish microwave oven. Cheap in Tesco. You can get one in your hand baggage. Also look at curtains & blinds which tend to be expensive in NC.

When my son brought golf clubs with him to N.Cyprus he had to pay

£20 - £10 each way. But he told them he was not bringing them back

but leaving them there. Still, £20. This was with Thomsonfly. This year

he took his best ones, and after the XL collapse had to pay a lot with first

Pegasus then Easyjet. Real rip-off.

yes we did the same with the golf clubs got one set split them between two bags and filled them with all sorts, it gave people a laugh when they knew what i had in them. we paid £15 and left them their. the bag is for sale if anyone wants it. having booked with kthy and the golf clubs are free we went to the boot sale got a lightweight one for £2 and nicked a kiddy set from my nephew and we are filled again. but this time they can come back as its free.

then in march we will do the same again. £200 for a full suitcase extra with monach.

Don't advertise these games too much or the airlines will get unhappy (you can be sure they know all the ploy's already). If you give them due cause, they will stop the allowances to the detriment of those who are "legitimate".

Not trying to be "goody two shoes" maybe just being wise or long in the tooth.
