Absolutely No1. LOL I do believe in maintaining the Welsh language as part of the heritage but there has to be a limit. It's not as if most of us can speak more than a few words or phrases anyway. Certainly not enough to understand many of the signs.

Simbas I knew I shouldn't have posted this or I would incur your wrath, if I wasn't careful! I am still proud to be Welsh. (phew, I might have got away with it!)

fire starter Cockney rhyming slang another language? I don't think so.... at best a regional dialect... at worst the misuse of unrelated words to exclude others from a secretive conversation... It may be contorversial but heck let's not get into calling this a separate language....

Groucho You may have a point but I would hope that Cockney rhyming slang doesn't disappear. It's amazing how many Brits. (not just Cockneys) from all walks of life use it, sometimes without realising it. It's part of our history and it's fun and we need as much as we can get! Must go, someone on the Dog and bone! Predictable eh?

Anybody see the Welsh roadsign in last Saturday's paper. The translator had picked up the paper from somebody's desk when they weren't there. The guyhad left his brain at home as had the signwriter. The translation of English into Welsh painted on the Swansea sign read; I am out of the office today etc etc....

cockney rhyming slang was origionally used by the people of london, so that the police or their informers didn't know what was going on. underworld talk so to speak. the usual words we use today are score, monkey, pony.(for money.) they are the most still used. it has developed over time and probably will go on doing so. recent additions are "rock n roll" : dole. and "bob hope" : dope. there is one saying which my dad use to use and i don't know where it came from and it was "knackers". talking about bol---s. (i can remember him saying he was freezing his knackers off.) can anyone enlighten me on that one?

thanks for that chessman! loads of meanings but still doesn't sort of explain where the slang came from regarding his knackers so to speak. i know the knackered part, but it still only says its an british/australian slang for knackers. i could add "cobblers awls" and "orchestra stalls" to that. if i keep on like this admin will be on overtime, lol.

Although the word knackered comes from the knackers yard where an animal which was on it's last legs was only fit for being put down... Maybe knackers comes from association with the Knackwurst sausage... just a thought... maybe indecent but a thought all the same....
