TURKEY hopes terms for the reunification of Cyprus can be agreed by the end of the year so that a referendum can take place in early 2012, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutogolu said on a visit to the north yesterday.

“We hope to find a solution to the Cyprus problem by the end of the year, and hold a referendum in the early months of next year so that Cyprus can take on the presidency of the EU as a new state that represents the whole island,” Davutoglu told a joint news conference with Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.

“A solution will bring real peace to the eastern Mediterranean and truly unite Europe,” Davutoglu said.

He said the only way the 2012 presidency allocated to Cyprus would be legitimate would be as a reunited island.

He said he had sent a message saying as much to the EU, telling the bloc’s leadership that the Cyprus presidency as it stands would be against EU principles.

Speaking of Thursday’s tripartite meeting in Geneva on Thursday between the island’s two leaders and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Turkish FM said progress had been made.

Ban said after the meeting that he expected the two sides to overcome their differences by October.

He said that if the sides were able to reach convergence on all core issues -- defined by the UN as EU issues, economy, governance, property, security and territory -- it would pave the way towards convening a final, international conference

and so it goes on....ad nauseum. Until the UN/EC understand and accept the real underlying political/historic/social issues then the Turkish Cypriots will always be treated as 2nd. class citizens of Cyprus.
