And it looks to be spreading fast with this breeze! From where we are in Karsiyaka, it looks to be in one of the ravines and going uphill very quickly

The fire helicopter from Turkey is now on the scene, but it's bucket looks so tiny compared to the flames!

Believe me these guys know what they are doing. You will probably see another helicopter along soon.

Nope! A twin engine plane just cruised around the perimeter and dumped its load.

The sea plane is picking up water just off the beach at Guselyali, very impressive. It is similar to the 'Canadair' fire fighting airplanes used in Southern France and Spain

That is strange. Normally there are two helicopters that work in tandem i.e one picking up water from the sea while the other is dumping its load. Anyway what is the situation at the moment?

Still the one helicopter (that I can see) and the twin engine, it's making some very effective runs over the backside of the mountain above Kayalar which is where the focus of the fire seems to now be. Below there looks like it's all burnt out

I was going to report that the second helicopter was coming in from Turkey but as I still see only 1 working the fire, would it have had to go back to it's base to re-fuel?

Last time there was a huge fire above catalkoy it was the Brit Helicopters from down south dealing with it...

I hope it's not as bad as this one.

At the end of June 1995 Kyrenia region suffered the worst bush fire in living memory when more than 160 square kilometres of beautiful forest and olive groves between Lapta in the west and Besparmak peak to the east were left burnt to ash.

Slimmer,

I'm in Karsiyaka and only looking through field glasses but it appears to me that the fire started above the housing line - and went up and over the back of the mountain. It seemed to 'peak' as it reached the top.

Hopefully someone closer will have more info for you

Some tourists said it started lower down in the village and spread upwards and peaked at thetop but it went along the mountain close to several properties. It looks so awkward for the firemen to get to some parts. It has certainly damaged many donums of land and is still going. I posted some pictures on another thread and these are the same pictures here in this link : http://www.flickr.com/photos/28373139@N08/sets/72157627044484587/

Instead of chatting on the internet everyone nearby should pick up a shovel and run for help! I just saw this and I am about to set off in that direction. I know exactly what happened in 1995 and pray to God it will not happen again! The whole mountain West of Altınkaya had turned to charcoal!

Hi folks, from the pics it's looks like the original village of Kayalar and above? We have a Carob Villa house at Kayalar and we are praying that it's nowhere near there. I sincerely hope that nobody has been hurt and nobody has lost their property?

Any updates would be very welcome.

hi moyra...its no where near your villa. much further up above the village. looks to just be fields not property but not been confirmed yet. seems to be out now, but they are still without electricity down by your villa, my husband phoned the electricity board in guzelyurt who said that they have to test everything before they can commit to turning it back on...not sure if it will be tonight...will be a very warm night for the residents of kayalar if it doesnt come back on.

we are living at the Carob Villas estate and the fires are still burning bright and the wind is getting up as well. No flames as yet but a big area with embers glowing into the night sky.

Electric been back on for a couple of hours now just hope the wind does not get it going again overnight and that not to many have been injured or worse. We have been told that 2 villas have gone but i have no idea if it is true??

Thank you very much Tinkie and Leylandlad - it's really worrying when you are not over there and you can't see exactly where it is. It did look as tho it was above the village from the photos, but fire travels so fast, particularly if the wind is blowing which is so often does up there!!!

I sincerely hope for everyones sake that the wind doesn't relight the fire and I hope that nobody has been hurt.
