Msg. 1 Back pain, covers a multitude of sins. For instance if I were to go to a pilates class I'd probably be paralysed from the waist down after one session. In my case I probably need a chiropractor and the only one on the island (a German gentleman) is in the process of leaving - or has left. Pilates would help me not one jot I'm afraid. T1

Member of our family was advised by GP to start pilates as the doctor himself had back pain also. Obviously move at the pace that is recommended. However both GP and the member of our family have positive results.

Go with professional advice, not from people who have all different sorts of back pain. I was also told by 2 surgeons and a doctor not to do pilates, yoga, or any type of exercise, however gentle, for my back as it would just make it worse.

I was diagnosed with compression of the spine due to sitting for hours at work every day, My consultant told me to go to Pilates and the results were amazing as it stretches and strengthens your abdominal core muscles, There are many people in the class of all ages and abilities.

It depends on the diagnosis. For example I have 3 bulging discs and the Dr. advised I should strengthen my core muscles to hold my spine up. I purchased a pilates dvd for lower backpain and it helped. Swimming is supposed to be excellent. Your friend should have an MRI scan to determine the cause of the back pain and exercise accordingly. Good luck!

Pilates can be good for certain back problems and if the professional advice is to try it then I would however the only thing I would make sure is that the pilates instructor is fully qualified and knows what they are doing or else you could easily end up in a worse position.

I have suffered with lower back pain for many years, mainly due to a stressful job and bad posture. After starting pilates with Suzy at the black olive cafe in Alsancak I have noticed a huge improvement as I have strengthened my abdominal muscles, learnt breathing techniques and improved my posture.... I now have a new lease of life. Suzy is very professional and highly motivates her students and has great positive energy.. I am now drug free. You will notice a difference within a week. Good luck

I was advised to do Pilates for my back but definitely not mat work as it could make it worse. There is specialist Pilates equipment that unfortunately nobody over here seems to have and also, as scoobydoo says, you need a fully qualified instructor.
