Vehicle age depends on the date the vehicle was registered in the TRNC and has nothing at all to do with the date that vehicle was manufactured. You could have a 20 year old vehicle that was registered in July 2010 and that would make it 1 year old for road tax purposes in the TRNC!

So, a 91 Pajero will only be 20 years old once it has been registered for 20 years. Mine is a 92 or 93 (wife gone out in it so can't check) but was registered in 1999 and that makes it ?? years old - the big thing here is that it is now over 10 years old for road tax purposes and that means that my road tax last year was 660 TL and should be a little (not much) bit less this year as well.

Hope that helps.

2.5 TD, SWB, Auto, Date of manufacture 1992, Date of registration in TRNC 23/8/1999. That makes it 12 years old next month (TRNC years) or 19 years old from manufacture date. Insurance 320TL a year. Tax 630.97TL last year. Cost including name change in log book was £4,587.00 in Oct 2009. Built like a tank and will go anywhere, bought for safety on the roads, these things will take a lot of punishment - no guarantees of course as nothing is totally bullet proof out here! Been a good all round motor for getting about and shifting anything in the back, even the fuel consumption is not too bad, given the weight of the beast (1460Kg) and the size of the engine (2476cc), at around 25MPG overall.

Now the down side - parts can be expensive and all of these Mk2 models are showing their age in the interiors. Have had the engine rebuilt and many new parts fitted since purchase but still can't bring myself to sell it on or trade it in - had one in the UK and they grow on you!!!

our V6 swb is on the market Looking for around 8,500 lira. As Waddo says they grow on you and the only reason we are selling it is due to the fact it was just too small when my van was off the road. Text gary on 05338653428 if you want to see it

One word of caution for you - I note you want one for your daughter! They can be very easy to drive on the tarmac but get them off road and they cease to be a pussycat. It is after all a big lump of steel with a lot of power under your foot and you can get them out of line easy with the aid of super power steering. On the plus side you will never find a vehicle more easy to park and get out of small holes than these things. Above all else they have a "presence" on the road which even makes taxi drivers think twice. Good luck and choose with care. It used to be - don't know if it is the same now - that when your vehicle reached the 10 year old (TRNC years) point that the road tax dropped to almost half the normal road tax and then went down by small amounts every year. You also had minor reductions in road tax if you had no speeding fines etc lodged against you in your vehicle tax year.

I fell into that whole scheme at the 10 year old point and my road tax went down dramatically. Maybe they have stopped the scheme and maybe not - would be worth asking at the tax office for sure!
