Our first rescued dog was called "Brownie" when we got him and had changed to "Otto" on the way back home - this because he is a German Pointer and my wife thought it a good idea (she had not seen the dog food yet!!!) - within a week he was fimly established under his new name of "Woofer" because he did not bark at all.

Second pointer is called Maggie, that is the name the previous owners gave her but she now answers more to "Wag" than Mag so slowing the names will change.

Always wanted a dog called "Rabies" so I could make people stand still in the street when I called its name!!!!!

Still got time................

We called ours Cuma ( means Friday ) because we found her abandoned on a friday, about 6 weeks old with a broken leg. She was in a field next to us and it was totally enclosed, so there was no way she could have got there herself. Best thing we ever found.

When we were kids, my brother and I would argue like crazy over which name we were going to call our dog and cat. We kept saying C for this or C for that.

In the end we use ceefer (as in C for cat) and deefer (you guessed it - D for dog).

The fish were easy to name: Gin and Tonic which was our dad's favourite tipple but were quickly renamed Baked and Beanz when he was in hearing distance.

My own 2 are fairly normal names..Poppy started off as Puppy...but then she grew up....Mr Ted...is actually Theodore...but resembles a big teddy bear...

As for the strays i have periodically taken in and cared for...i figured that to help them get homes, i would give them human names which in theory people would want the animal if only to give them a better name!!

In loving memory are...Kevin, Berty, Zsa Zsa, Hank, Roger and Brian....and for the wonderful kitten who thought he was a dog...Spank! I miss all of them....

Our dog nearly died at birth and got rabies. He recovered from that and got a liver disease but fortunately he recovered. A week later he ran out into the road and got hit by a car. He was in hospital for a month but survived. A few weeks after he lost a paw in an accident.

We call him Lucky.

Our first 4 chickens were Pinky and Perky, Dastardly and Mutley! Guess what my favourite characters were as a child!

Then we got a bald chicken so I had to think up a punkish name. My schoolday favourite was Toyah! Another two chicks were named because of their colours - Peanut and Pumpkin. Then we got our cockrel who was another baldie but I couldn't think of another appropriate name. As a day old chick we thought he was a girl. He used to scream the place down after attention and was only quiet when sat in my hand or cuddled in my neck. Because he screamed so much at any other time I named him Lulu. Then Lulu grew up and we realised he was a Luis, but we just couldn't get out of the habit of calling him Lulu!

Got two ducks last weekend and they are a real funny double act to watch bobbing around the garden. They are now George and Mildred!!!

Two days ago a turkey hatched (got the egg from the farm next door). The only one with no name - Xmas dinner!

our 1st was a rescue yorkshire from KAR, we called her KARA, our second KAR rescue (again a yorkie) we called KOJAK because when we got him he was in such a bad way and almost bald (Ferdez said it was the wost case she had ever seen) hence the name - he now is a real picture of health with a beautiful coat

Oh, forgot one more pet! When we first moved in to our house a local stray cat decided to adopt us. I'm sure she must have been someones pet and they had left the area (and her) because she's got such a good temperment, sits at the door to ask to be let out, never jumps up, loves to be combed, and sits in the garden guarding the chickens when we're at home or sits on the window ledge waiting for us to come home.

Anyway I wouldn't let her in the house at first in case she had fleas so she became known as 'Fleebie' and it just stuck!

The rest of the family thought I was cruel giving her the name Fleebie, but how would she know!

Our cat is a rescue cat who came with the name Mopsey. We kept this name as it just seemed to suit him. He's a long haired cat with a rather bushy tail which he likes to drag around the place...similar to a mop! Hence the name 'Mopsey' suits him down to the ground.

We had a rescued mongrel who was difficult to train and we called him Pongo. For some reason, many of those who had pedigree dogs, when learning his name, would ask if it was chosen because there were naval connections. I would shamelessly reply, "no, he simply leaves a pong everywhere he goes".

We found Bob, after he had been dumped in a bar at 6 months old. Very friendly puppy, was bobbing up and down at anyone who gave him any attention. Joey, (3/4 month old puppy as at the date of this post) was brought to me by a female neighbour, called Joelene.. dog male, so I named (nearest I could get to a he, after her,). Charlie, also dumped, no idea where that came from, but he is a black cross lab/pointer and just seemed to suit!

What a lovely post you have started here "bigbadbob". Most refreshing change from all the sniping and moaning that goes on C44

Bob is still missing, by the way, but please know that I do follow up any posts which have been posted, but as I said earlier, bit like looking for a needle in a haystack ...

We have three dogs.

The eldest is called Rose as she is a true English Rose, from England.

The middle one is called Kadife, she is a Turkish girl and was named that before we rescued her. We actually live in Kadife sokak, so it was fitting to keep the name.

The youngest he is an Italian import and was also named prior to us getting him, he is Hugo Boss.

I think we may have the United Nations of the doggie world occuring here?

One of our cats was thrown from a moving car into a restaurant foyer when a kitten, barely old enough to see. We were the only residents amongst dozens of tourists so scooped it up. The kitten is tricolour and the largest parts of the skinny body were the ears. Having been assured by everyone that it was male we called it Reynard as it looked like a fox cub. Subsequently the Vet confirmed that it was female and that virtually all tricolour cats are female. So, we agreed that her name be "Foxy Lady". Soon after a shop in Girne opened and traded as "Foxy Lady" In the years since just about everybody who meets her comments on how beautiful and friendly she is. Even strangers who do not know us as friends make comment such as "When we go for a walk we always stop and look over your wall to see if your beautiful cat is there". I can seldom look at her without feeling deep gratitude for all the joy she has brought to our family and disbelief that she was treated as trash.

Several years agoIi found a female cat had just given birth to her kittens at the Post Office in Girne, she eventually found her way to the KAR charity shop just across the road, where she spent many years and when she finally passed away I buried her in our garden in Ozankoy. we called her "Stamp"

My late and much beloved Giant Schnauzer was called waffee (faithful - arabic origin) and my Akbaş puppy is called Banu (lady / princess - persian/ turkish). Her name sounds like baloo the bear in jungle book - and she resembled a fluffy white (polar) bear when I got her. Although I want her to act like a princess or lady she obviously hasn't read the meaning of her name -as she's a little devil!!! (But wouldn't be without her). At the moment she is sporting a clear lampshade collar after being spayed on Wednesday!!

My first two dogs were called No and Stopitt.

Many years ago my sister had a cat named Doris. She (the cat that is) was taken to the vet to be neutered, and it was revealed that a mistake had been made. After its return, the cat was re-named Boris.

My Labrador, when a puppy used to climb up inside my jumper and fall asleep. He hated being alone and I called him Cuddly Dudley, which I shortened to Dudley.

One of my horses was very, very thin when I bought him. I named him Oliver after Oliver Twist, as he always wanted more food. He turned out to be a beautiful horse and fantastic event horse and I had many offers of large amounts of money, from people who wanted to buy him. I kept him until he died.

Forgot to mention earlier, - when in UK had 2 lambs a year for 3 years - Gin and tonic, Romeo and Juliet and Brandy and soda. A pair to look after, the kids helping with bottle feeding etc and then the run of the grass - then come autumn, the butcher. Lovely lambs they were!

Our big girl is called Lulu shortened from name she was given by breeder Lucy in the sky,our boy whom we rehomed arrived so badly beaten and mistreated we decided on Zeus which means living,he is now absolutely gorgeous and healthy.Number 3 arrived also in a very bad way but with the most beautiful big eyes we called her Tia which is egyptian for princess and lastly the baby of the bunch Habibe which means my love in arabic. My daughter named her 2 cockatiels Elvis and Cher, her 2 favourite singers and her budgies Bugsy and talloulah from the film Bugsy malone. Last budgie named Lucky because he flew into the house while being chased by crows. Chickens called Betty,Bertha Baby and Boo,and Tortoises are Tommy,Prince Archibald,Crackle,Nim,Princess Tiana,Habibe ,Strawberry shortcake,Chocolate chip and the last 4 to arrive have been called Eeny,Meeny ,Mieny,Mo .We have just rehomed a cat and its name is Gigio shortened from Grigio which is Italian for grey.

Our two came as a pair of Cyprus Terriers (Poodles) supposed to be brother and sister. He was named Zeytin aka Satan at times. She was named Buddie but she became Bonky aka Bonkers. They had both been spayed and neutured a short time before we took them on aged 3 and 4. She was apparently with pups when she was spayed. She has not lost any of her old amorous ways and is always trying to show Zeytin what to do. Hence Bonky.

I don,t know whether a hedgehog counts as a pet but 2 weeks ago we found one wandering around in broad daylight he was small and covered in ticks but he did move quite quickly. We took him to a hedgehog rescue centre and the lady said he was a boy andhe had to have a name so I quickly thought of the name Sebastian [as in Sebastian Vettel]The good news is he did survive and we fetched him back on friday and released him into the garden where he has a nest full of hay and newspaper. He was still around late last night wandering around the garden so we hope he will put on enough weight to survive his hibernation this coming winter.

We have two cats - both moggies - I had just returned from a holiday in San Francisco in 1995 and was offered a kitten which had been found in a skip. How could I resist, thinking of a name decided to look at the map of San Francisco for inspiration and went for Soma which is after the Soma district (which stands for South of Market (Street)) in SF. Then in 1998 decided to get a male pal for Soma and got to thinking of names, anagrams of Soma and came up with Amos, Soma backwards.
