Just a simple question regarding working, do you need a work permit if you do the work for nothing or do you need one for this as well in NC ? ...

I was told similar information - checking work permits (and licences/permits for each venue). Apparently the BB's and local adverts have been watched as well as advertising boards outside premises.

So come on, tell...... do you need a work permit when you entertain for nothing, or are helping a charity to raise money which is for the good of the community?

So, is the ruling aimed at the singers or the premises, or both?

Metin would love to hear the full facts from you - is there a story here?????????????????

If the government were to sort out the work permits properly, then maybe people would get them. Entertainers are advertised by places who book them so the government could always know them and could check wether work permits are owned or not. If they get things sorted then they would get taxes paid and they would benefit, Still like a lot of things in the TRNC are weird as a lot of the powers that matter often do not have a clue on what they do.

An entertainers work permit doesn't exist, thats why nobody has got one. So its about time this Government got its finger out and sorted this problem once and for all.

You can work as an entertainer without a work permit if its for charity, but its got to be a RECOGNISED charity.

I believe it has been the same rule in the south (pre EU) so it is probably a cyprus wide ancient (needing to be changed) ruling. However, with ref to message 20, does that mean that the raising of funds for Ismael's needs should not have been allowed?

The law in any country has always deemed to be an 'ass' but it is time in the interests of all that it was changed to another animal.

ZERO easy targets ( brits ) are fair game why anger casino bosses who pay huge taaxes when they can target entertainers who in the main have no support or voice.

Hello Dave good to see you back !! Entertainers who visit on a Visa can perform almost overnight as long as they and the venue pays taxes ! Hence Ali Campbell and George Benson etc and by the time the government work out how to stop them they've gone !! Entertainers here can perform for a Charity but even then they must be a "Foundation" Charity ! Isnt it about time the UK responded and did similar to all the Sandwich bars and Kebab houses in North London ha ha !!! Or would that be Prejudice ????? regards Barry

In the paper it says they are not going after the big names as they are only here for a few days, and the taxes are sorted by the venues.

So why can't the same happen for the ex-pat entertainers ???

Chateau have been visited on several occasions and the outcome is normally, Gordon tells them where to go, as they are on private property.

and they were quoted as saying (last year) "they are all old and own their own houses" ?????

May be Soyz market has younger stall-holders !!???

Who in there right mind would want to come and holiday here in the TRNC if there is no where to go for an evenings entertainment. This issue of work permits need to be a number one priority, because this Island needs the tourists.

Lets get one thing straight. Ex-pats wether they are entertainers or have stalls in markets they are all willing to PAY there TAXES to the Government. So hopefully someone out there can help them get work permits, because after all said and done they are helping the economy for this Island.

Just remembered something to prove that little changes in the world. Remember 'My Fair Lady' at Drury Lane in the 1960's with Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison and other stars? At the time Equity would not allow any American to be part of it, and a mate of mine who was in America learning conducting (orchestral, not bus!) was asked by |Lerner and Lowe if he would take the job of Musical Director of MFL because he had a British passport. He was actually Jewish and now l.ives in israel (and has been here to the Bellapais Music Festival) but the fact that he had a British passport got him the job. So, that was 50 years ago so what the government is doing here is no different to Equity then -protecting their own entertainers.

And before you scream 'This is cyprus', I am writing to show that things DO change so let's hope some kind of consideration can be made to changing things here. Just a thought.

I think the answer would be to let the bars/restaurants/hotels etc pay the tax necessary and deduct it from the entertainers payment. No work permit needed, just a receipt book (kept for the accountant). So simple.

The tourists/locals could still have a wide variety of entertainment. The government get their taxes. And the entertainers can work without fear.

???????? Whats the problem.........

Metin Thats what was said by some of the entertainers, have a receipt book and the venue de-ducts the tax. SO SIMPLE !!!!!!

Metin..........here's one problem - people with legitimate businesses pay thousands of TL per month (each) for the privilege of running a business with a relatively small turnover and a few employees.

If they let expat's (entertainers) do what you are suggesting, it opens the door to legitimate businesses who may decide to ditch their companies and associated overheads and work on the same principal as you have suggested. This will result in a loss of revenue to the Govt. so, it will never happen !

We are living in someone elses country as guests. Stick to the rules or, face the consequences, but most of all, stop whinging ! Expat's/foreigners cannot be self employed and cannot get a work permit/license to professionally entertain.

Entertainers can still entertain 'unpaid' for a worthy cause - a licensed charity !

AND raising money for needy people makes you feel good

This topic has been discussed here many times and has been the subject of many debates.

Brit's need to stick together and work together, but I doubt that will ever happen so, we are easy targets !

Until Brit's realise that and STOP stabbing each other in the back, nothing will change !

I think the answer is simple. Each venue buys an annual licence. Each time they have an artist on who is "casual" they go to the belly and get a permit for that particular night, cost of say £20 single artist, £40 for a band and preferable £200 for karaoke!

Obviously imports are different.

Everyone is a winner, government gets a tax, venues get to pick from different artists, artists can make a little money which then goes back into the economy.

Oh and music and no permit, immediate suspension of liquor licence for 2 weeks, hit them hard easier to police.

There is no such thing as "casual", part-time or, self-employment for foreigners and we don't make the rules or, in fact, have any influence over those that do.

The arrangement that has been suggested wouldn't be allowed anywhere else, why would the TRNC be any different ?

I think we're missing the point here.

Its not about taxes. If it was they would make a law so expats could obtain a licence.

Its seems more about NOT wanting "expat" entertainers, Full stop !

Tootie......I disagree, it's about the laws, rules and regulations of the TRNC and everyone (including Expat's) adhering to them.

It's probably more about the venues employing various people without work permits, not just entertainers.

I have it on good authority that, last week, the authorities visited many establishments and that, many were found to have staff on the premises for which they had no work permits and were not paying the relevant taxes etc.

This is about tax avoidance - not about targeting Expat' entertainers.

So are we to include, BINGO Callers / Quiz Masters / Toast Masters ?

Let Entertainers get a seperate certificate for every gig they perform at. (for a month in advance) These certificates to be signed by the Gig Proprietor in duplicate after the performance, both copies to be sent in to the licencing authority (independently) and tax deducted accordingly. Easy to monitor, by Entertainers name. -not that many !

Entertainers caught performing without the necessary certificate for THAT gig can be fined and have their equipment confiscated. ( That will make them apply for a certificate and ensure they are paying the tax )

Everyone happy !!!

Msg 45 There is such a thing as "casual" most of the entertainers here are, cash in hand unofficial etc. VERY difficult and labour intensive to police.

What I suggest is make it semi official allow a bit of PT work under an umberella and at least get something in the exchequer for it!

Entertainers might want to start a petition and then arrange a meeting with the powers that be to present it telling the papers beforehand also for some publlicity would be good.

I expect the whole employment and tax system needs an overhaul. Employers do not seem to get too many benefits for having more people on the books in fact more like penailised for earning more and needing more staff.

Remember some people work long days and get minimum wage and live in places provided by their employers some people on here wouldn't put their treasured pet in. And to boot still don't get the security of a work permit

Otherwise they will be easy targets for the police won`t they...............or do they know who they are anyway.

Wonder who tipped off government about Emma Marie, is it not strange that now they have banned her 'Grove ' are now having local entertainers Gypsy Bros. Bet the government were spoken to by another local restaurant who were losing business when the Grove were busy with Emma being there, tiped off the government and led to them banning Emma Marie. Why do they not just charge bars/restaurants for having entertainment that way they would get money. Instead they are slowly banning other nationalities from singing so eventually we are going to have some really crap locals singing that will make people go to places that do not have any entertainment. Some locals are excellent entertainers, but the majority are not.

Japeal..........On the night that Emma was checked, the authorities visited many places checking ALL the staff who were working in the establishments on the night.

One place had 4 people working without the relevant paperwork !

To turn this into a let's "Get the Brit' Entertainers" witch hunt is stupid, but unfortunately, typical of what you might read on CY44
