Anders Breivik the Norwegian shooter. In a statement by his lawyer this morning on BBC, said that this man is insane.

But is he? or is he still playing a game, by acting insane he will go to a secure psychiatric unit as oppose to prison.

Which brings us to the debate is he mad or just bad?

I did think it was rather presumptuous of the lawyer. There cannot possibly have been time for a full assessment yet. He just seemed to be preparing a way for the defence.

He appears to be a controlled psychopath obsessed with his own right wing views - he certainly knew what he was doing. How many of them out there - its shudderingly frightening.

In my mind, anyone that can open fire on so many children has to be insane...but then again...what really, in medical terms, constitutes insane??

Not that long ago, talking to oneself was considered insane...i do it all the time..or at least i think i do...!!

What is the absolute definition of insanity....?? And can one be 'turned' mad just by listening to to someone ranting and raving.....i think so....

Should have been smothered at birth - simply 'bad seed'; and when they're like that there's nothing to be done.

Chris this man had some serious serious fanatical views not just against muslims but also against women working. He hated anyone connected to the labour party (his own lawyer is a member). This was a well thought out a planned attack on innocent people not the actions of anyone who is insane.

Considering the fact his lawyer is a labour party member how can he defend the actions of this man in a court of law so i think the insanity plea is his way out and as he said in his own interview if he does not accept this advice then he will need to look for a new lawyer.

Once he is inside, the others will get him. Hopefully they will pull all his finger nail out first , then castrate him, and then string him up.!

Most of these "crazy" fanatics shoot themselves (or are shot by police) before capture, he hasn't - in my opinion finished his mission. Will he be allowed to spout his hate in a court of law I wonder? I agree he is after attention but I think he will get more than 15 minutes worth.

We may be giving this man the attention that he craves, but only by understanding what causes these sorts of events can we begin to look at how to stop them. I agree with Bondi, however 'psychopath' is a term often misunderstood and can cover a wider range of personalities than most of us believe. An interesting article, easy to read, but quite lengthy is attached.

It may make you think seriously about people you know. However be aware that there are many psychopaths in the world, not all are mass murders.

All this agreeing with Mark, see, something came good out of this post.

I think the only 15 minutes of fame this guy should get is when they put him down for good.

What good can he do for society?

If ever there was a case to bring back the death penalty, it's now.

The time and money which will be spent in trying to determine whether or not he is clinically and/or legally insane could perhaps be better spent on the bereaved. The end result surely must be the same, that he is securely locked up where he can not cause harm to, or suffer harm from, others, which again will be at great expense. I doubt that he will be given much opportunity to harm himself but if it happens not many will feel it to be a loss.

I was delighted to read an article this morning :

"A German hacker group has called for online users to circulate altered versions of the 1500-page manifesto by Norwegian terrorist suspect Anders Behring Breivik, until the original document is drowned out by copies.

"Ensure that Anders becomes a joke, so nobody takes him seriously any more," declared the hacker group Anonymous on Tuesday.

Perfect! Dilute his ranting until it becomes a joke - and make sure he knows it.

It may have been a hell of a lot easier. However that would not have pleased him so he surrendered / was captured.

This fact alone shows that we are better than they who would commit these crimes. Our restraint, while maybe playing into the arms of someone like him, proves that most of us have a strong sense of right and wrong and thats what makes the world safer for ourselves, our children and our granchildren.
