Like many others, I have elected to hide my true identity behind an alias on this forum. The admins (mods) can access it, but members can't. This is because I have seen the vicious and personal attacks that occur on this forum, seemingly with increasing rapidity.

But the days of anonymous posting may be over, particularly if the forum owners follow Google+'s lead:

What do you think? Should anonymous posting be allowed or should we all be required to stand up and be recognised for who we really are? Or is there a compromise solution?

Why does anyone need to be cloak and dagger if they do not have any hidden agenda. One or two on here do it all the time

For me anonimity on the internet should not be the 'default' but should be the exception , where it is shown that it is necessary for a specific reason, like say whistle blowing, but in normal everyday matters it should not be the norm.

Erolz, the point is made in the article that certain categories of posters may need to keep their identities secret, such as Human Rights activists under repressive regimes. this doesn't normally apply on Cyprus 44. Should we request (demand) that posters' real names are available to members unless the Mods decide otherwise?

Quite sometime ago, on this forum, it as advised that we hid our email addresses, because of unwanted emails....
