Well Cornish, thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to publicise things we feel are important, to get a message out to the rest of the country, and not just to the people who log on to read gossip or exchange views and ideas through this forum. It could be a worthwhile cause. Are you willing to 'name and shame' alleged corrupt businesses for example on the sayso of a forum member if they seem to have just cause and evidence to back up their claims but no financial backing to hire a solicitor to take them to court, or other means of harming the business through bad publicity? If so, you could be extremely busy!

Cornish; Just a thought but why can't you generate your own material? As for message 6; if your own employer was named and shamed (not that he would be) would you feature it? Tricky, but it's hard to stay objective. Good luck.

Seems people can't win. Members of the forum moan about the quality of the papers over here, and yes I agree there is a lot of rubbish published. So someones attempts to do something about it, and he gets slaged off. Just my view, please lets offer some support.

@ msg 7, Newscoop: (...) Cornish; Just a thought but why can't you generate your own material? (...) ▶ Newscoop: not fair, you're on thin ice. I didn't read in msg 1 that Cornish asks for complete, edited stories. Many news papers in this world have sections where readers are asked for hints, tips etc. In my opinion Cornish just uses the available (social) media also. How could some (sports)writers generate their own material without TV, the Internet and reference books? Are journalists from a certain news paper generating their own material when they call me for information/verification about something medieval (Cyprus)? Of course they are. Just a couple of my thoughts.

After reading your trials and tribulations I wonder if you would be interested in my story? If you check out my blog (Link below) it will give you a head start should you be interested. https://www.blogger.com/blogin.g?blogspotURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ericcraptonshadow.blogspot.com%2F There is of course a lot more to the story but which cannot be put on a public forum in case litigation ensues.

Hans; when others contact you they are rightfully verifying their facts. when sports writers use the net etc they already have the article in mind and are mainly doing the same, then as you know they interweave said facts into the articles. My point was by looking for 'real life' stories Cornish could find himself against a rock and a hard place on certain subjects. Please note; I did wish him good luck.

who is hippo? I think I know! But there is a huge difference from being paid and have someone crack the whip behind you, and being an unpaid columnist, when quite often it costs the writer money to produce the article. One has a choice to make, although I admit that sometimes the choice does not work out as hoped, so that is the time to decide whether to go or stay. Guess also it depends on whether you want to report' do P.R for good causes; report history as it is; give profiles of people deserving of being better known etc, etc. Many writers need 'leads' and that is what I think Cornish is asking for )(and what I ask for) - info that will lead one to a story that people might want to read/share.

Hi Cornish its interesting your thread, for a while I stopped buying the Cyprus Star, but I now do. As well as many of the original reporters the papers now have Marion and Chris whose articles I find most informative and obviously well investigated and well reported. With what you are asking are you going to be crossing there paths or even duplicating what they are doing. The Star has greatly improved recently but as a reporter surely you find the articles, investigate and report, not ask them to be sent to you on Rocker

thank you Rocker for the kind words. I am sure that we can all work together for the good of The Star -no ego trips allowed here - just providing news and views (and pics) for the readers. Isn't that what it is all about. thanks for returning to The Star, but I cannot think it is because of me! (you lovely boy, you!)

I thought the purpose of a journalist was to go out and about and ferret out stories, not sit waiting for people to contact you? Or has journalism in the TRNC different?

I don 't do much of the leg work these dasd, but my car does alot of kms in the interests of real stories, and always has done. I don't always get to hear of the stories and have friends tell me of things - so a journalist out here is both. Seek and find, and be led and follow. rthat way nothing gets lost - hopefully.

How come some in this thread think they are "a journalist" because they put or have put some characters, one after another, for the low quality printed pieces of paper called news paper in TRNC..?! Most of the self-styled "journalists" would be stopped and thrown out at the reception desk of a real news paper.

Under your previous editor Cornish I was virtually ordered out of the newspaper office because I was unwise enough to join in a thread on C44 about him jumping out and taking pictures of people. In short, I laughed at him. I had gone in to give him some material on K5. He said he would never publish anything about K5 again, and he didn't. So how do you feel about publishing material connected with K5 or Stop the Blackmail in Noth Cyprus facebook Group. Will your boss allow you to publish stories connected with the builidng industry? For the record, my membership of the Chartered Institute of Journalist is genuine, I say this because I understand some doubt has been expressed about it. The editor of NCFP will verify this if asked, he was the one who suggested I apply and instrumental in my doing so. Pauline Read

Hippo - do I get paid? You want 100tl for a page. Not in Cyprus, dear friend! As they say in the 'classics;' this is cyprus'. Lots of people write for nothing including Dan Gibson the former Editor of The Star, and many people in the industry (all industries) get paid the minimum wage of around 1300tl a MONTH, so I can't see anyone paying you 100tl for a page. Elsewhere, yes, but here......? As to the ch.inst of Journalists that is not too difficult to join, but to be a member of the NUJ in U.K you have toprove yourself. But in any event, lots of journalists belong to no unions, but they write stuff that people want to read. I agree Washerman - a lovely old man used to say to me 'It's got to be READABLE' but no doubt there is a reader for most things somewhere.
