Hi Guys

I am planning on moving over to North Cyprus, Kyrenia area in January for a year. I recently separated from my husband and have not lived in UK for over 11 years so the idea of staying here is rather depressing. I have always fancied North Cyprus and it seems pretty cheap compared to UK and of course I know the benefits of living in the sunshine. I obviously want to make some friends once I arrive and wondered if anyone could suggest any bars that wouldn't be intimidating for an English 45 year old lady who's a little shy at first, or if there are any other places that would be good to meet people. I see there is a sports bar Paradise bar that sounds interesting I just wondered what it was like as I love my sport (well watching it at least)

Sorry If I've rambled on too much but I want to make the transition as easy as possible and be as prepared as I can be so I imagine I will have many questions on the forum over the next few months.

Thanks and have a great day guys

JK's in Lapta, friendly bar always someone to talk to, and plenty of sport. Actually most of the bars okay if you are on your own.

The Black Olive Cafe & Studio (also has a bar) in Alsancak is a great place to meet people, very friendly and always lots going on there, from music nights to exercise classes, etc. etc. It's near British Academy School.

I think there are many places here that you will feel much more comfortable in than the UK.

Lots of very nice people here and in general a good community .

You are correct it is much cheaper and if you are sensible with money, I think you will enjoy a far better lifestyle.

Good Luck.

Yes there are several nice places on your own Kervan bar/restaurant at Kervanseray is good, Black Olive Cafe as said, Taners Terrace at Karakum, watch the world go by at any of the cafe/bars in the center of town and read the paper, very pleasant.

I think that will depend on the woman. Some may feel more intimidated than others in any bar.

However you appear to have made the move by asking the question and January is a long time away yet. Keep visiting the board and chatting to other members and I'm sure you will find you have much in common with many of them.

I am sure that by the time you get here you will already know some of us and wont have to spend much time in bars on your own.

Anyhow, welcome to Cyprus44, I am sure we will see a lot more of you here.

I have lived alone here for 9 years and have never had a problem in a bar/restaurant/beach or anywhere. Best place for me. Good luck.

Hi, as Nurse Awful says, we do have quite a few single ladies who come in and they are always welcome but just to reiterate msg 9, I would say to any single lady to be careful when they are out and about. When it comes to safety it's best to apply the same rules etc as you would in the UK or wherever else. Most people here are very friendly, but its always better to be safe than sorry. That being said, I'm sure you'll have a great time

Ravine bar in Alsancak very safe and friendly staff that always have time for you and good customers also I must add.

Mambo bar Alsancak always has lots of single/couples at the bar, and the girls behind the bar are all brits.

Just be sensible is probably the best thing, regardless of where you go. Obviously, as in any country there are women (I won't say ladies) here who are quite frankly "bar fly's" and think they look clever with a young TC as "eye candy", but most places you will be just fine and the local men and some Brits, will take their behaviour from you. Be over familiar and they will behave likewise.

On behalf of the huge amount of male members of the Turkish Cypriot family I am aligned with, I take great exception to Msg 15. I am well aware you have endured a dreadful time at the hands of your daughter's father; for you to make the posts you have is clearly cathartic, but you will agree, unfair to the vast tranche of indigenous men - I feel sure there are Turkish Cypriot members of this board who would take offence at knowing you have warned all comers to view them with a jaundiced eye........to say "stick to the brit men" when it is common knowledge ex-pats oftentimes have widespread alcohol related problems (and NOT just the men) confirms (with sincere respect) clouded judgement informed by erstwhile toxic relationship. I only post this, to give a more balanced response to mistymoppet's enquiry - TRNC is a wonderful place to live, but like everywhere in the world, has good and bad people...one has to use one's common sense when a woman alone - as one would wherever one is

I agree with messages 6, 14 and 17...

I have worked in many (many) bars in North Cyprus for a number of years and can honestly say, i believe i may have seen it all!

There is not one particular bar in Cyprus that i would feel comfortable saying with a 100% surety that a woman on her own would be ok...(unless i was working at that bar....then i would definitely make sure she was safe and had a good time) however...if you post on here for a while...i can promise that by the time January comes around, you will have made enough friends to go out and have an enjoyable evening.

I have been here for quite a number of years now, and if you need someone to talk to and perhaps give you some unbiased advice, please take a note of my number and call anytime.

MsGarnet.

Agree with you entirely. Unfair to paint all the Cypriot male gender with the same brush. On the whole it is perfectly safe for anyone, either male or female to venture out to any of the bars alone. Usually it is quite easy, if one wants to, to get chatting to people as most people are relaxed and friendly. It is, here as anywhere else adviseable to us common sense. There is a thriving ladies darts league and mixed bowling league and they are a good place to meet people. KAR, (Kyrenia Animal Rescue) are always in need of people to help out by walking their rescue dogs. There are a number of other ways to meet people here and I am sure once you are here you will find this out for your self. Good luck with the move.

Get your priorities right and you should be ok, finding bars and making friends wouldn't be my first question. Will you have to work, where will you live, I think that is what you should be asking about.

Horseshoe Bar in Girne is very friendly and I think you will love here. There seem to be lots of clubs too so that's a way of making friends. we find it very friendly.

I often go to Silver Rocks, with friends or alone. Have never felt intimidated there at all. (Although I may have frightened a few myself!! - Joking!)

Wow thanks everyone for your replies, much appreciated, I have been an expat for 11 years now and travelled all over the world all be it with my husband so am not nieve. I will continue to wear my wedding ring and am not remotely interested in meeting someone romantically so if hit on they would get a polite no thank you. I am however a little shy which was why I asked for some nice places to go on my own so I don't accidentally walk into the bar from hell.

Message 21 it's a little presumptuous of you that finding places to go for fun has been my first priority. No I don't need to work and I have already been in contact with a few people concerning accommodation.

Ailleetoo thanks for those suggestions I will certainly look into the dog rescue thing as I love animals and in particular dogs.

Daisy dukes I will certainly give you a call when I arrive and maybe we could meet for coffee or a drink and have a chat.

message 27 - happens to us females, too. You suddenly realise that you've walked passed a building site and not one of them has shouted out to you or even wolf whistled.

When it happened to me (many moons ago, I might add), I walked past the building site 20 times and still no response

There are plenty of gay bars in Girne if you are worried about being hit on.

Hi everyone, again thanks for your feedback it's been very helpful.

I am very much looking forward to moving over and I hope meeting some of you and becoming friends, you seem like a real nice bunch of people.

When I first arrive I want to rent for a month so I can look round before committing to a years rental So suggestions on decent clean places to stay that wont leave me bankrupt would be much appreciated?

Arriving middle/end of January
