We've just bought a house and understand that we should make a will to ensure that the house and our assets are not taken by the government when we pass away.

We have been quoted £150 each plus 42TL stamp duty, which I think is exorbitant.

Does anyone know of a solicitor that will not charge such high fees.

We paid the same 2 years ago, needed 2 wills one for each person. Straight forward - go to an advocate then lodge at the courts in Girne. Wouldn't do it yourself could be real problems if one of you passed away the laws here change every 2 years - pay the fee for peace of mind.

▶ You are of course free to stick to your opinion, but do people not pass away when a lawyer has made the Will?

Self-concocted and court registered wills using a local will document template have been the subject of a recent case here where the husband died and the wife now has to appoint a solicitor to execute the will, taking some months, and at a cost of £1000+. She cannot even change the ownership of the car into her name, let alone the house kocan et al. Where will this government lead expats next I wonder?

Take a look at my 'Musings' in this week's star and you will read the story of Enid as mentioned in message 6. She too thought she was o.K, so please, message1 double check on everything. It seems to be a bigger minefield than one might think. This is NOT UK. For instance with a house, even if you think you bought it jointly, you actually own half each, so it does not actually go to the other partner on death, but costs £1000 as mentioned above. my husband and I are in the same position, so it would be better to have it in one name only - if only one knew who was going to fall off their perch first.

As to cost, ours was £100 EA\CH for a simple computer print off I could have done myself, but it really is best to go via a lawyer. good luck.

Just a couple of points:

If you die without a will, it will go to your heirs. The laws are the same for all.

The British have the right to bequeath everything.

Other foreigners can bequeath all their movables. Their immovables are subject to the same laws as the locals.

For the locals, those who have children, the disposable part is only a third i.e. they can give away with their will only a third.

Its worth to have an experienced advocate to draw up your will but its your money and your choice. Probably the advocate will eventually be better off if you draw up the will yourself.

Tiny Msg 1- We asked Ismet (Elco2) for help from his wife who is a reputed Advokat

For the two of us (two wills) which were very complex wills we had help from them both and were only charged about £200 so contact him off board (it was very well worth two trips to her office in Famagusta).

That's roughly what we paid as well 4 years ago, remember you get what you pay for.
