My elderly Father is very ill and the family want him to return to the UK asap. He will need assistance from medical person on the journey and may need to be sedated as he is very frail and in constant pain. Have any of the members experience in this matter? If he cannot return to the UK we have to consider the worst case scenario and need to think about repatriating his body. I'm sure there have been cases of this in the past, help and suggestions welcome.

I believe when you are ill you have to have a medical cert to prove you are fit to travel. Does your father have any kind of insurance that would cover a medivac? I hope you can get this sorted soonest.

John it all depends on how sick he is. Is he mobile or could he go in a wheelchair with a companion or does he need 3 seats converting into a bed and a nurse or dr travelling with him to keep him sedated. If it is the first case then he could be given a painkiller injection just before the flight if it is the 2nd case then that might be a bit more tricky and expensive but i am sure not impossible.

John Msg 1 - A number of thoughts I'm sorry but not all nice but before that I am sure the posters before me have sympathy for you and your father as I do. 1] Has your father got travel, health and or repatriation insurance? 2] Is there one of the family who can or will travel with him? 3] You say the family want this do you? 4] What does your father want (he is very important in this)? 5] What do the medics say? 6] In the "worst case scenario" is it imperative that your fathers remains gets repatriated and is that what he would want?

I would suggest you contact the British High Commission asap for advice. You need to get your father assessed for travel and as Tom has pointed out Travel Insurance needs to be checked out. It will also depend on the type of illness your father is suffering as to the airline requirements and also suggest you check this out asap. If your insurance does not cover you need to negotiate with them again and will cost extra. I do hope you can get your father back to the UK soon at such a worrying time for you.

Thank you to all members postings. He is 82 and terminally ill, he has numerous cancer secondries and would need sedating with a stretcher bed on the plane. My parents have been living here for 8 years and it is the wish of all of the family for him to return to the UK where he can rest in peace. I'm sure the problem of repatriating his body after his death is going to be considerably tougher..... Once again thank you for all of your kind comments and I will follow up on all of your suggestions.
