I agree

Everytime you go out there is always someone trying to sell raffle tickets or carrying a bucket and asking for your loose change. One gets a little fed up of it. I just want to be able to go out for a quiet meal or entatinment without being hassled all the time.

Stop it!!

It really is a shame that you feel like this about charity nights. You can avoid those nights, you can choose not to go.

I can only hope that you will never, ever, ever be in a situation where ill health suddenly hits you by surprise and you need the help of one of these charities, in my case I support HTWCA/Tulips through my own personal experience.

A few years ago this charity used to see 6 people per month then by the beginning of this year it had gone up to 15 per week and then last week 9 new cases came through the door on Monday alone of which almost half were expats seeking help and advice and further 4 ne cases on Wednesday.

More than 95% of the money raised by this charity is done via the locals and not the expats but there are more and more of us expats being diagnosed with this dreadful disease therefore in turn there are more of us seeking help.

Continues

So please, if you don't want to give; don't, it isn’t compulsory and we are not offended, it is your personal choice.

If you don't want have your evening meal interrupted by raffle ticket sales then avoid those nights in those particular restaurants, there are plenty of restaurants looking for business out there.

But please, do not put down the hard work that many do for what they consider worthwhile causes.

Thank you

Sue

Message 1 & 2 ! There have been numerous reports in papers and forums regarding the problems with regard to entertainers performing here other than Turkish Cypriot unless for a recognised registered charity/foundation, surely you have seen this recently. The message is clear ! therefore IF the public, expats or others, wish to see or hear anything other than Cypriot music or Cypriot entertainers performing "hotel california" at every bar/restaurant then they have to be in conjunction with charity. Having explained this, usually, venues providing entertainment in conjunction with a charity, advertise the fact prior to the event thus giving you a choice of attending or not. Whilst charities are neccessary and do a fantastic job especially here in TRNC it is still an option as to whether you donate anything at all ! it is not mandatory. Please also consider the charity workers give up there precious time to attend these events. "One" never knows when "One" may need their help. regards !

I am not against charity nights, I have organised music quizes etc my self and raised more than 600 YTL for Tulips. What I am saying is that sometimes it is too much, nearly every bar every night is doing charity nights - just lets have some moderation.

The other posters are correct, one is normally forewarned (if that is the word) about charity nights, and believe you me, they are important. There are several charities helping the sick and also needy children and exist solely because there IS a need. There is not a welfare state here as in other countries, and we need to help each other, and what better through the charities which provide hope and answers for many people who are victims of the dreaded big C.

You don't HAVE to giv e!

As for me, I like going for a quiet dinner to talk to friends which equally one cannot do when there is entertainment, so I go somewhere with no entertainment. It really is easy to make a choice.

But, I really do feel sorry for anyone who doesn't know the key to a contented life. 'It is more blessed to give than to receive' and so charity nights give an opportunity to be blessed. don't you want that, message 1????

And don't forget when you are grumbling about the blackmail of having to give - think of the entertainers. I noticed Barry last night was bearing up well. How long did you play for Barry? Admittedly there was a breeze, but it is no mean feat to stand on your feet, keeping up the rhythm and enthusiasm on a hot night to make a lot of people happy. Firstly the audience and secondly the benficiaries of the generosity of the audience.

Everyone knows I am a square and that rock and heavy metal and modern pop don'#t appeal to me, but one has to applaud big hearts - and that is what these entertainers have!

Phew! And all for no money and a lot of expense but given in love! and you are doing it again tonight! I don't have much to give, but if I could give a Gold Star to folk like you, I would. Hope you believe in heaven for you will get your reward there, for as you know there is not a lot of it down here, other than the satisfaction of knowing what you are doing helps others. Can;t be bad.

A great night once again Barry, next time wear a hat!

Scoobydoo Great to see you looking so radiant and love the hair.

For anyone who hasn't been to Sunset, we were there last night for the first time since 2005! Decided to try the 10tl curry, it was wonderful, portions not huge, but the taste brilliant. Well done Sunset.

I have given to any and every charity that has ever approached me - if you can afford it, it's the easiest way to get rid of 'them' !

If you can't afford it, that's not a problem, but don't come onto a public forum and tell everyone - they may think less of you !

The most important thing that anyone can give is their 'time' - help a charity !

There are people out there that don't have much time to give !

Your ignorance and attitude is just beyond belief.

Hundreds of fund raiser give up their time to improve the quality of life of people in the TRNC who are suffering.

All you can do is moan.

Its just staggering.

I agree with Barry. Unfortunately I was unable to attend last night, but will not miss another...To Barry and all those who give up their time,"THANK YOU"

One thing Barry, they don't sing "Hotel California", their version sounds more like "Otell Cauliflower".....

I don't think Ismails family would agree with messages 1 and 2.

If it hadn't have been for Jan and I and some very decent people, that liitle lad may not have reached age 6.

On Sept 9th he is 7 (all being well) But he needs the help of able bodied people like many of us on here, to get there.

Collinson...Msg 23. I should know better not to bite, but here goes. I speak for my husband Barry Snakes and he does not keep going on and on about Charity! He supports it when he can give his time and because we have both been subject to our families dying from Cancer like so many people, his Father alone suffered for 15 years in terrible pain. Come and meet us face to face and get to know us before you start slagging us off. We do our best to help. You disgust me.

Nurseawful, thank you for your msg .... the hair, well I would swap with you any day! It was good to see you.

I can only guess that some people do not really have any comprehension of the costs of treatment ie chemotherapy alone.

We raised 1,142tl last night at Sunset, Washerman raised 300tl on Friday night at Eleanor Rigby's of which both were a great success however (and unfortunately) both these amounts raised will not go far due to costs.

For examply, chemotherapy - 1,142tl if you are lucky will pay for one person for 2 sessions (based on my personal experience) however I also know that 1,142tl will not even cover half the cost of one session for another person that I know. The costs are huge and always unexpected as no one plans to get cancer.

This is why we have to continue to raise funds.

Redwine - how do we have fund raisers in moderation? Look at the figures in msg's 4 & 5. It gets harder and harder to raise sufficient funds, but we have to keep battling on.

Charity begins at home, I only give to animal charities, the Blue Cross is one I particularly support, I don't give to kids charities mainly because I don't do kids, they are a pain in the butt.

msg 30 Roger.I suggest you leave this alone, unless you want to become known as some kind of anti charity evangelist.... I see you are a retired IFA...."Inter Flora Arranger" well someone has to do it, perhaps it was your low wages that provoked your anti charity stance.... If you don't have it you can't give it ......fortunately some of us can and do ........... In helping others you inevitably help yourself .

MartinD41 ! Collinson (who is NOT Collinson) (we KNOW who you are) is such a coward, numpty, and many other words we all know, has now received a ban from the forum for "its" continual destructive comments and general "chip on shoulder" attitude and one very insulting comment to Helena (which will NOT be forgotten)which is purposely done to "wind up" people who try to help others. These insignificant "little" people will not be missed ! Regards Barry (smashy or nicey ???)

I aoplogise if I offended anyone concerning charties. I am against charities at all, I have organised a few quiz nights recently in aid of Tulips. The point I was making that this particular week 3 times we had been out for a meal and are were approached by charites with a bucket asking for loose change - first night ok but same on subsequent nights and the venue did not have any charity night on.

Anyway concerning Whats on Esentepe if any charity would like to advertise I will but a seoarate What's On Charity page just email the details of the venue what Charity it is for and will be more than happy to update as frequently as you wish, even send me pics and they will be included. Go to http://www.meteor.org.uk and go to submit ad page.

Again there was no offence inted in my original message
