| Amazing news that an airliner breaks up on landing in Guyana and thankfully no serious casualties. A taxi driver beat the emergency services to the scene and charged a victim 20 US dollars for a lift to the terminal. He should have been punched not paid ! In the 1960s I was one of the last British soldiers to leave that theatre aboard a heavy transport plane carrying helicopters. The runway (Atkinson field then) was too short for takeoff and 3 days was spent hacking down trees to make a bumpy start from the jungle and speed onto the runway. As we took off, the runway was lined by wailing and waving paramours and a drunken steel Band was banging out "If I had the wings of a dove". Squeaky bum time for all on board. On a stop over at the Azores, jungle canopy debris was found entangled in the undercarriage. Must be a lucky airport in Guyana. To this day when facing anything to be feared I sing out loud "If I had the wings of a Dove" (and wish I had nappies too). |
