Having read two thirds of a previous thread back from 2010 (Got fed up reading all the negativnicks!) on the positives of living in Northern Cyprus (Which I can’t now find because of the maintenance this afternoon!) I thought I would start my own thread.

I have been here exactly one month today! I’m not meant to be here, I’m meant to be there! (RoC) I have to keep pinching myself into realising I have fallen into a nest of lovelies. A nest that covers the entirety of TRNC and I mean from Farmagusta to Iskele to Arapkoy to Alansancak to Lapta, which is the furthest I’ve travelled South so to speak, apart from trying to cross at Pygros on that disastrous first day here!

Dealing with the legal aspects of living here can be a chore but even that was not as bad as the officials in the customs were surprisingly helpful (Perhaps it was the two articles in the Kibris Gazette, slagging off the Greek officials that did it?) but as they say ‘when in Rome….’ (Continued next post)

And if you don’t like it there are boats and planes leaving every day!

I’m a great believer in fate and have no doubts at all that I am meant to be here, not there! I hate to harp on (I don’t really mean that cos’ I do really!) but if anyone is interested in reading how fate bought me to Northern Cyprus, I have a blog page where one can read all about it.

Blog link:

https://www.blogger.com/blogin.g?blogspotURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ericcraptonshadow.blogspot.com%2F

Click on the orange adult consent menu block on the left (Only because I don’t mince my words) and it takes you to my page.

(Continued from previous post)

What I will say now is and I’m sure most people would have heard this said many times (Mainly to do with the amount of con-artists, arseholes etc. etc. here on the net) ‘If it’s too good to be true then it is.’ Well it’s what I keep thinking as I pinch myself out here but it’s all true; all true. In the very short time I have spent on this paradise of an island, I have made more friends than I made back in England in the last sixteen years. And yes, it’s all true! Even though I’m still not one hundred per cent sure that I will be able to settle long-term due to financial restraints, I’m going to give it a damned good try!

So please, no negativenickness (There you go, I’ve invented a new word on Cprrus44 )

Let’s be happy one and all and exhort the virtues of living on this beautiful isle.

Good time, I'm in a dream world The sun sea and the sand. A swim in the Med nearly every evening then dinner in the beach restaurant. Meeting lots of wonderful people, you included of course. Saturday nights at the Black Olive. And being an optomist there is a lot more to come, I can feel it in my water

'Shud I stay or shud I go?' Would make a good title to a song

vonny: I will try and say this as politely as possible. Until I have a hole where the sun don't shine I will avoid the south like the plague, like I will never live there. I walked across the border a few weeks ago to visit my Godson and his parents. When I got to the Greek side of Ledra, the official gave me a wry knowing smile, the smarmy bitch!

Does that convey something to you?

Come on now boys put the handbags away and be nice to one another and if you can't be nice go take a hike and start your own topic.

Thank you Lilli, you’re too kind.

'You are in a honeymoon period and for that I envy you'

Oh dear that sounds ominous! But hey, I'm an easy going lad with a positive attitude many would be proud of. I was in Wales last year, Tonypandy. I had a great time and the Welsh are lovely people too and very much like the Turkish Cypriots until you get on the wrong side of them! It would be lovely to see you too at the Black Olive as it is to see everyone there. It’s a great place to be after a hard week of swimming in the Med etc. etc.

Lilli: No The Black Olive is only open on a Sturday night. If it was open every night I'd be worn out and broke!

LittleQueenie: Thanks and wow! you are really into cooking. I too love to cook but list of recipies I can drum up don't add up to much. Will take another look at your blog when my fingers cool down. Incidently have you rver cooked queenies? Check out the Manx recipe on the net, they are delicious.

LOL yes I know it started as a blog about Northern Cyprus & turned into a food blog.. I think being from the UK i miss certain things (food wise) and now go out of my way to recreate them- sometimes to ridiculous lengths..

The cooking obsession has fired the gardening obsession- moving to Cyprus has made me a very strange girl ha ha

I will check for these recipes you mention! I don't think I have heard of this

Msg 38,

Nick, reading some of your posts over the last year or so, I can see that you have been quite helpful in your comments and advice but really , for your own sanity, I think you need to adopt a more friendly attitude ! We all need help from time to time with life's problems and being an "elder lemon" does not mean we should become a "bitter lemon". This is not a criticism, merely an observation ! Whatever, life is short ! and I still enjoy many of your jokes ! Just lighten up, a little !

Eric clapton, ''honeymoon period'', babe, we've been living here for the past four years.

We are just a 'normal' couple,we don't go out drinking every night. We eat out, maybe once a week, if lucky.

But, I almost have to pinch myself each morning to realise how lucky we are to have found this lovely island.

I really hope you are as lucky as we are. We also were supposed to be moving south, but there by the grace of God go I. We ended up being here.

love the comparison,

My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim

I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway;

I heard the mission bell

And I was thinking to myself,

’this could be heaven or this could be hell’

well actually I have written a song about this

darling, you gotta let me know

should I stay or should I go?

If you say that you are mine

I'll be there till the end of time

So you gotta let me know

Should I stay or should I go?

NN said in msg22 "hopefully no more from you, AJ and Erolz after that.... "

I have already explained to you before NN, but once more, if you think helping others to start up a forum means I will no longer be participating here, then you are mistaken. I will continue to post here or not as I feel like it, just as I have done previously when I helped others create or keep up other forums or sites to this one. I will continue to try and help where I can, comment on things of interest to me and challenge those who I think post nonsense, misinformation, exageration and distortion. So hope all you like but if you are going to do so here is a poem for you

collinson: I'm not saying I'm hard but it takes a lot of knocking to get the stuffing out of me!

I never gave it a second thought once the idea of travelling across Europe to Cyprus entered my head. Even when I got negative advice! And look where it's got me? It's got me where I want to be.

Morning Eric do you have any caraway seeds for when we have my Goulash lesson?

Want to fit it in before you go to UK, and any other Hungarian dishes you can teach me.

have freinds in Hungary now and maybe if there are anyother things we need they can bring back for me

You know eric, even with all the problems I have encountered here I would not want to live anywhere else.

I wake up every morning (at my age a bonus), look out at the sea in front of me and the hills behind and thank God for it. THe Hawks that ride the thermals, the swifts that dip the pool, the beautiful bee eaters that visit, the little fox that says hello. Yes it is wonderful.

But not for everyone and thereby hangs a tale. Enloy it eric and I hope you never become any less enraptured by it, but as Lilli so rightly says, 'honeymoon period'. You do not have the right to tell people who do not like it to go, have you stopped to think, they may have had the wherewithal to start a new life somewhere else stolen from them? Life is not bliss here for everyone.

Nevertheless, I still love it and will stay, unless of course they deport me.

misunderstood: The only real problem I've had so far is from the customs and border police of the south. I vowed to drag them through every EU court in Strasbourg but hey, once my blood pressure dropped I decided life is too short. I'm enjoying what they gave me, a relaxed and tranquil life in the North.

As mentioned before somewhere, I had two articles published in the Kibris Gazette. On my last visit to the customs in Lefkosa the customs people couldn't have been more helpful after I showed them the articles. A few little things lurk in the back of my mind but they are for the future and will deal with them when they arise.

Cocklebay: Yep every morning I go out on the balcony, for my first fag and I sit looking at the mountains, the beautiful coastline and wonder at its beauty. I keep hearing rose 'tinted spectacles.' I may be naive for a man of my age but not stupid and realise obstacles will arise that will need to be dealt with and I will deal with them as and when.

My apologies 118VICKI118, I overlooked your posts last night as my fingers were working faster than my over-worked grey cells.

Yes, I do have caraway seeds (And they are all the way from Hungary) but they are in storage in Limassol! They don’t have to be Hungarian though and I’m sure can be purchased in any of the supermarkets. I will get some for you no problem.

I’m glad you liked the blog. Before I set up the blog page I looked at many others and was determined not to bore the pants off people with inane posts. My brother works at the BBC in London and he bandied the blog page around and one of the news reporters has taken a great interest in my wanderings. I am to meet with him on my return to London as he is considering doing a story on me! I had to put the little bit about you in the blog as you really were shooting around almost in a blur. I don’t know where you get your energy from but I’d like to know?

Any chance of elaborating? From sunrise to dusk my brain is filled with dust so I’m afraid to say it but things sometimes need to be spelt out to me and even then the information disappears, I don’t know where!

Eric, I hope and pray that your life here remains the same as it is now. Before I found out about K5 mortgages I too felt exactly that way. Sure I already knew I had a crap build, but I just said, okay, worst case scenario, I still have the land, of course even that has gone along with the villa the Kaders (Akfinans owners) now weekend in.

Despite all that, I know the T.C's (those not eaten up with greed) are good people who are ashamed of the actions of their fellow countrymen and this is the reason I will not leave willingly. Also of course, I am through being angry and now intend to get even. Funny you should mention the EC courts, ours of course is the ECHR so wish us luck.

My wish for you is good health, good luck and a good life. Paulinexxx

I'm surprised anyone would buy here anymore when rentals are so cheap and there are so many potential problems with buying. I wouldn't dare risk it myself or want to put my capital into a property either I guess.

misunderstood: I have no intention of buying a place here, as said renting is the way to go. But if I in a years time i felt the way i do now i would go for a re-sale (If i had the money? which i haven't!)

I have only one negativenickness about the place: and that is i'm being eaten alive by insects and sand flies so i've been informed at the chemists. I have spent a fortune on pesticides, sprays and ointments for my pains but to no avail! Any advice greatly appreciated.

I dont know the answer t insects Eric, they dont seem to bother me much, maybe I am too tough an old bird, or maybe they think I have my share of problems. At night I spray the bedroom and then put a mosquito mat on (electric) and that takes care of the next 8 hours., during the day I have no problems.

Eric,Msg.82; I have been following your "journey" in Cyprus44 with interest.

Your question at this point shows a point of "enlightenment" and I am sorry to see your best efforts "crash and burn" so quickly.

My advice (FWIW) is to treat the forum as if you are walking down a street full of people enjoying the sights.

Most of the people are only too happy to exchange pleasantries with you as you look around and gain a better understanding of the place. However there are also a few people walking amongst them with varying degrees of an affliction akin to that described by Gilles de la Tourette. In time you will develop your own strategy to deal with their attempts at "making conversation"

Why is it that some folk can find their into a country but can't find their way out so they then, all of a sudden, love the place and the people and decide to stay, at least until the motors are scrapped EH?hahahahahahahahahahaha...

Eric, it doesn't work for me, the little rugrats feast on me relentlessly, I hope it works for you though, some swear by it, I hope you enjoy many bite free days, oh and nights.

During a recent visit i found ~Avon skin so soft effective - no-one really knows why it works but my theory is that its so oily the little pests get stuck and cant get "stuck in" properly-if that makes sense.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised. Hope it works for you - the sandflies, especially, are an absolute pain to some and can cause some serious discomfort (to say the least).

Thank you all for your advice re sand fly bites. Someone on my estate suggested I get some 'off', I've re-named it sand fly F-OFF I was told to spray it on my bed inside and out then spray it on me as well. Well, I got some and it worked, hooray!

Woke up this morning feeling fine

The first day since when nothing's on my mind

Last night I never got bit on the neighbourhood, oh yeah

Something tells me I'm into something good
