I'm sure many of us will be thinking of old friends, former comrades and loved ones at 11am. Wear a poppy with pride.

Well said Pikey. If it wasn't for the ultimate sacrifice of so many, we would not be here today, and we should never forget them.

Remembrance day not only remembers the brave soldiers of yesterday who fought and died for our freedom but the most recent ones of today that have sacraficed their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan...whatever the rights or wrongs of these conflicts they are still heroes each and everyone of them.

I also think we should remember the currently serving and surviving ex-service men and women.. they don't need to sacrifice their lives to win our respect. So many ex-service men and women carried the weight of full horrors of war on behalf of the free world... I've met some people with invisible scars who were still haunted by their experiences..

one thing I do miss about uk, there are not many, is being able to watch the remembrance service from the royal albert hall. Having said that, I still remember the men and women who made huge sacrifices so that we could live in freedom, and thank them.

Nige, it is now 90 years on that we have remembered those who fought and died in conflict so that we can be free. I cannot imagine the UK ever giving into any pressure to cease the Rememberance Day - a time for all of us to think about soldiers past and present who have given their lives, and continue to risk their lives for us. As in years gone by, this Rememberance Day was honoured by ALL faiths, Christian, RC, Budhists, Muslims, Greek Orthodox etc., and they all came together to honour these brave men and women, irrespective of race, or religion. So I don't really accept that there is any danger of the Rememberance Service not taking place in the UK in the future.

In wanting to fly the Union Flag. The TRNC are well within their rights to object. Turkey had a bit of an issue with the Brits. It is highly unlikely that a commemoration of the war dead British and their allies would go down well. We would have the same sort of issues if the ex members of the Waffen SS wanted to raise their Order of the German Eagle around Whitehall. In the landing of 1st Battalion at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, on 25 April 1915, the regiment won the distinction of awards of the Victoria Cross to two Officers and four Other Ranks. This is popularly referred to as the 'Six VC's before breakfast'. The landing beach was always thereafter named 'Lancashire Landing'.

fire starter: "...we didn't as we had the threat again of being thrown into jail in lefkosa by our local police station. god bless the trnc!" Those tin pot amateur clowns should take certain other foreign flags down from their own stations before hassling residents for flying the Union flag in a Commonwealth country!

cyprusgaz msg 15, I see where you're coming from, however Turkey should butt out of interfering over flags in Cyprus - since far too many of its own fly there illegally. There should be only one Turkish flag flying in Cyprus and that should be at the Turkish embassy in Nicosia. Secondly, Turkey has no problem with Britain over Gallipoli. Ataturk himself honoured the British and Anzac dead and said they would rest in peace in Turkey as if their own sons.

Pikey "Secondly, Turkey has no problem with Britain over Gallipoli. Ataturk himself honoured the British and Anzac dead and said they would rest in peace in Turkey as if their own sons." I went to Gelibolu (Gallipoli in English) last year, a very humbling experience indeed. The tablet of stone commemorating the brave men who died said this..... Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours... You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." Makes you feel so humble and reduced me to tears.

Kay, I agree it is an extremely emotional message and perhaps one which should have been picked up on more at this time of year of commemoration. I think Ataturk, like many Turkish men, was very much in touch with his feminine side.

Musin: "still nothing nice to say about the turkish pikey bad mouthing turkish cypriot police behind your pc eh" Unlike you I have respect for Turkish people, hence my many visits to Turkey and investment in Turkish Cyprus. But having what I'm pretty sure is a lot more police service than you, I know how rural units operate in Cyprus and the UK. And only a tin pot amateur would hassle an expat for flying a Union flag when he could just easily have said: "Didn't even see the flag, Sarge. We were out looking for someone." Still, just as well the fine British system which you have enjoyed for the past 50 years allows you the freeedom to hang a TRNC from your bedroom window in London, eh?
