Hello All,

There have been a few recent threads on this subject; I'd like to ask if there is anyone out there, who is in possession of the actual calculations that KKTC Customs make to determine the duties levied.

We all know that part of the determined import value is based on the estimated domestic (UK) value of the car; however, does anyone clearly know whether this is based on the original sale price, or the current values (presumably based on Glass's Guide, whether current, or not)?

Also, part of the determined import value is based on the Engine band (per CC) of the car; does anyone know what the bands are, and the actual charge per CC?

There are other charges levied, as part of the total; does anyone know what they are based on?

Is there a kerbside weight charge? Is there a CO2 Emissions charge?

All information will be gratefully received.

Cheers, Eddie.

Hi Eddie,

The customs work on the following criteria for European produced cars. (Japanese & American cars are a different band)

All values are taken on "Trade" values of the Glass's guide without consideration to mileage. Customs further add £1,300 for transportation to this value, then depreciate the total sum by 20%. I.e. £10,000 book Value + £1,300 = £11,300 - 20% = £9,040 Accepted Value.

The following calculation will then apply;

Customs @ 10%

Dock Fee @ 4.4%

Military Contribution @ 2.5%

Stoppage Fee @ 4%

Then based on the vehicles CC they will add the following;

up to 1600cc 2.03TL Per CC

1601 to 2250cc 4.03TL Per CC

2250 to 2999cc 7.53TL Per CC

3000cc + 10.53TL Per CC

Once the CC rate is added to the overall first set of calculations, the total is added to the vehicle value and a VAT of 20% is taken from the total.

Hope this helps Eddie, if you need any further info let me know.

Hello Ahmet,

Thanks very much for your detailed reply.

Having worked through the figures, based on a value of £11,000 for the Subaru Forester 2.5, and on a conversion rate of 1 TL = £0.36, the total duty is very close to the £15,000 quoted.

For the Mercedes-Benz C180K, at £9,500 value, the calculated duty is £10,453, close to the £11,000 quoted.

So, the answer would seem be to bring in a low-mileage, small-engined, non-prestige car.

I'll gert busy trying to find one that I like.

Any idea as to whether a Mazda RX8 would be considered as a 1,300 CC car?

Thanks again for your reply. What a pleasant change to find the answer you need.

Welcome to Cyprus44 Forum.

Best Regards,

Eddie

Eddie if you are looking for a "new to you"car remember the age restriction for imports

It used to be 3 years old and under I believe from reading Cyprus Today that has risen to a 5 years old

If you have owned a car for over 5 years registered in the importers name for that period that is the only exclusion

We bought my wife's 6 year old car in when the 3 year old rule applied but she had it registered in her name from new

Also when we bought the car in the cc engine charge was in us dollars paid in TL the value for the car was in Stirling paid in Tl

when it comes to road tax the weight of the car is the governing factor

our road tax on a 1250 cc Fiesta is the same as a friends 1.6 Fiesta about 290Tl per year

It also depends on what they class as EU made.

When we brough our Ford in we checked with Ford in the UK and it was built in Bulgaria, in the EU.

Customs here refused that and classed it as made outside the EU, so they could get more tax money.

Once they have your car here, you have no chance of arguing the point.

We have TC friends who have a car site in Lefkosa, they bring most of their cars from the UK, so if your coming here it may be worth waiting and buying a car here.

bearing in mind the place is rapidly going down the tube - perhaps the gov't should allow anyone who gets 1 year residency to import their own car, tax free (on the condition it can't be sold for 3 years)...

sounds logical to me.........
