Just watched an interesting clip in show TV. A Turkish woman who just died in a village had decided to cut her hair, have regular shaves, and dress like a man, just to avoid sexual harassment after her husband died when she was 28. She did all kinds of work that men did without being discovered. Apparently she had lived and worked like a man until the age of 77, when a stray bullet lodged in her hip, during an exchange between two parties who had nothing to do with her. The doctors at the hospital must have realised it when she was operated on.

The clip contained some of the clips of the interviews with her at the time. She claimed to be a woman at all times and expressed, if born again, she would still like to be a woman! The reason she was in the news was because she has just died aged 78, and was buried in a "women's part" of the grave...

I think there is good material there for a good film

Shades of Yentel! And you learn something new every day. I must admit the 'shaves' threw me a bit. did she take hormones so she COULD shave, or did she have an overdose of testosterone naturally. ah well, nought so queer as folk!

Maeion; According to "Türk Haber" agency, she shaved initially (intentionally) to have harder and more beard/mustache grow. I know for sure that, it is a common belief with Cypriots and Turks alike that the more you shave the more and harder the beard grows. Perhaps that explains why women traditionally used "akide" to get rid of the hair reather than a razor Obviously in an attempt to present herself as a man, she was trying to induce a better growing beard.

yenibob; We both know there are no "women's section" in graveyards in Cyprus, but I am informed that in some more religious parts of Turkey, they do have separate areas. With the number of new Mosques mushrooming in TRNC lately, I will not be too surprised if it becomes (or has become!) a practice in some villages here too...

Ralph96; A lot of women in warm and hot climate areas of the earth have more hair growing than any man in colder parts of the earth (uınless genetically mixed of course)

fine, but I am glad to say I have never had cause to shave! I don't have anything to shave and hence no way of making the beard longer. I have seen Greek Orthodox Nuns with longer beards than many fellows I know, so maybe one has to be a mediterranean for such a phenomena to occur. Still sounds odd to me that she shaved. If I did, I would merely take off the skin! And I bet I am not alone in that.
