The 47th anniversary of the Erenköy Resistance was remembered with a special ceremony this morning.

The ceremony took place at the Erenköy Martyrdom where those who fell during the struggle against Greek Cypriot attacks were remembered.

President Derviş Eroğlu, Prime Minister İrsen Küçük and other state, government and military officials attended the ceremony.

The ceremony began with the laying of wreaths and this was followed by a minute’s silence in memory of the martyrs who fell during the village’s defense against the Greek-Greek Cypriot onslaught.

Flags were raised to the national anthem and the special book was signed.





Many speeches were delivered during the ceremony.

Meanwhile a ceremony was held in İstanbul for Erenköy martyrs and martyr pilot Captain Cengiz Topel today.

Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk has said that the Cyprus Turkish people proved to the world on the 8th of August 1964 that it will not become slaves to any with its glorious Erenkoy resistance.



In a message he issued to mark the 47th anniversary of the Erenkoy Resistance Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk said the Erenkoy resistance was the turning point of the national struggle waged by the Cyprus Turkish people and this day is remembered with much appreciation and honor.

The Premier said the Erenkoy Resistance shows the strenuous struggle waged by the Cyprus Turkish people for their existence and carries great importance in showing where the Cyprus Turkish people have come from.



Meanwhile political parties and some non governmental organizations have issued messages marking the importance of the Erenkoy Resistance.

The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Hasan Bozer has issued a written message marking the 47th anniversary of the Erenköy Resistance.





The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Hasan Bozer has said the resistance was a real milestone of the Cyprus Turkish people’s struggle for existence.

He also added that the resistence was a story of bravery, patriotism, courage, faith and determination.





“This story was about the standing up of a nation who was living in poverty and how it sacrificed itself by forming a wall in front of the enemy all in the name of existence” said Bozer.
