Reports are coming over the TV and radio of incidents involving rioters last night in Dalston, East London. Rioters apparantly attacked a shop belonging to a member of the Turkish community. Unfortunately for them the local Turkish shopkeepers were waiting, armed with baseball bats and other weapons. The result rioters running away with sore heads attempting to find an easier target. http://100gf.wordpress.com/2011/08/08/turkish-shopkeepers-stand-guard-in-dalston-londonriots/ There is also actual footage on the web and further stories. We have yet to hear a police spokesman telling citizens 'not to take the law into their own hands' Perhaps on occasions like this they are quite happy to sit back and watch the fun It is strange that when some with a racist agenda are quick to bring in the immigrant factor, that it is immigrants who are taking the lead in protecting against looters.

1.36pm: Jasmine Coleman has been talking to people who live either along or near Kingland High Street in Dalston, where Turkish and Kurdish shopkeepers were out in force last night. Many are grateful to the workers around here and thank them for stopping the spread of violence from nearby Mare Street and Dalston Junction. Debbie Mumdy, 41, who lives in Shacklewell Lane where a bus was set alight last night, said: Most of the residents are really relieved that the Turkish community has been protecting the area. I think it was the same situation in Stoke Newington. It's thanks to these guys that Kingsland High Street wasn't attacked." And Nick Smith, chairman of a charity fundraising business based near Dalston Junction, said: It's brilliant. These guys are obviously going to keep the trouble down. I don't think this particular area is going to be attacked as a result."

My daughter lives in Stoke Newington and cannot speak highly enough about how the Turks have protected the whole community. "Awesome" was how she described them.

Bill - there are quite a few already saying this (some on other, related threads on 44). Someone actually said they were looting supermarkets because the poor little sods didn't have enough to eat. It was later pointed out that the loot consisted mainly of fags and booze. I just wish some others would take a leaf out of the Turks/Kurds book and stand up for what is theirs. Stop all the pussyfooting around and fight fire with fire. It's the only language this scum understands.

So two wrongs now make a right? Tooling up with baseball bats ect is against the law in the UK is it not? What would have happened if the mob didn't leave? It could have turned out very different. I don't see this rioting is about theft, its about poverty and police abuse of the stop and search laws. Theft is just a bonus for them.

All I can say is that if it was my property they were going to start looting and destroying, I would lift the first thing that came to hand and defend myself and property. Chris

I agree. It's not about poverty - they don't have this sort of thing going on in Calcutta. It's about Feral Thugs. They don't want to work and think society owes them something - so they gang ip and take what they want. I would arm myself if necessary and shoot anyone of them without blinking if they tried taking anything of mine that I've worked hard all my life for.

Turks, Kurds,TC's and even some GC's joined forces and grouped up in three areas of london last night to protect their premises and the local streets, tonight over 1000 will be grouping up to potentially fight off any attempted attacks... It's every persons natural right to protect his/hers livelyhood regardless of the consequences, and if I was there I would be doing the same. Violence is the only language these thugs will understand.

Blade You have quoted more than once stop and search. There is a saying no smoke without fire. I have friends who are from the Caribbean area but they don't have a problem with stop and search but then they are law abiding citizens. B
