There are various public tannoy announcements made in Alsancak. I would suggest all Expats that do not understand Turkish to enlist the help of their T/TC neighbours to translate. Today there was an announcement that a policeman aged 23 (I think) that received a gunshot wound and there was a call for anyone with the right blood type to respond. If any of you saw a gathering outside of the Belideye this afternoon this was a response to that tannoy announcement.

Please make yourselves aware that in the event of emergencies the tannoy system is and will be used to notify Alsancak residents.

Thanks for that bit of info. When we were over last month we heard the tannoy but didn't have a clue what it was about. But will make sure that we ask in future.

Just a thought.

Could be a good idea,

to have an English translation

in cases like this.

As it's likely that someone who doesn't

understand Turkish may have been able to help!!!

My Turkish is not good but it is important to get to know your TC/T neighbours because they will always know what is going on. I was also out of the village at the time of the announcement but driving back through the village I spotted 2 of my neighbours at the Belideye meeting and phoned them up to find out what was going on.

In the past Shelly the wife of Ken "the pie man" was enlisted to give information to Alsancak expat residents via the tannoy system, I am sure if a resident pops into the Belediye and offers their services they will be more than happy to use your translation, as a thought, there must be at least one employee of the Belediye who can translate and speak English, if not, any new information, legislation or rules that affect Alsancak residents and can result in a fine if not adhered to will see the expat community forking out yet more cash for the community.

Aslan, "as a thought, there must be at least one employee of the Belediye who can translate and speak English"

If at least one of the Belediye can translate, , why wouldn't they just repeat it in English? there would no need for an English speaking volunteer, a bit redundant.

They also use the tannoy to inform the village of a death as burials are conducted very soon after death.

but isn't that the point littlenige - how many people moan about the 'foreigners' in england who want it all their own way, in their own language and for everyone to bend over backwards for them - this is a Turkish speaking country, surely we owe it to ourselves to learn the language, or at least try and understand it, and last but not least, abide by their rules - ignorance is not a defence.

Quite true, livethedream, but when someone is bleeding to death maybe it's better just to get the message across, in whichever language.

i feel sorry for that young man but regardig the annoncement in turkish there is nothing wrong - when the foreignersliving in cyprus will try to learn turkish they will be able to intégrate because learning the language of the country you are living in is what "english french, germans.... are asking to intégrate so why should it be different in cyprus - most of the people in belelediye speaks perfect english but do yu see annncement in london in differents languages when a car accdet happen and they are looking for witnesses !!! i never noticed ! english speak english to the shops expecting people to undersand them like a normality - Some of them, after more then 10 years don't speak -

I think if I was in deseperate need of blood, and many people in my village spoke a different language, I would be very grateful for anyone using that language to transmit an important message.

I totally agree with Sylvie about learning a language, the big problem if English is your native tongue, then which one do you learn?

I have worked in many countries around the world, just not practical to learn them all, and let's be honest, the common denominator in language for most of the world outside of S America is English, hence the reason you are able to converse here Sylvie (French) along with the TC community (Turkish), and a few others (Dutch, German to name but 2 others) - we all fortunately do share the common use of English.

Hi All

I have lived here for 7 years and can speak Turkish

You have to make the effort,

I remember in England we used to moan about Indian/Pakistanies not speaking English, If they are in a different country for a lond period of time the least they could is try and intergrate with the locals

Or it's a case of them and us

Thats so sad, such a young life lost needlessly. But on the positive side it was good to see the way the Alsancak residents rallied round to support him.

Do you know where/when the funeral is?

OK I understand. I was just thinking that if his funeral was local then I would have liked to have gone and paid my respects with some of my neighbours.

So sad.

RIP Yusuf, great guy with a fantastic mum, I sure hope she is ok.

It's very sad and hopefully as this guy was a good cop, the government might take some action, not aginst Hanifi but the hunting groups as a whole.

Every year one, two or three men lose their lives in the name of this sport and sadly Allah did not have a say in these tragedies.
