This is an attempt at humour yes? Your first time, I'm guessing? Not funny. In actual fact pathetic. Put down your gin and go to bed woman you've had enough. I'll guess that's not the first time this has been said to you.

I'm sure Richard Manninton Bowes the 68 year old pensioner who was attacked in Ealing and died in hospital last night, along with the 4 other deceased victims and the 168 police officers who have been injured in the riots will really appreciate.

Plus my 2 daughter's who are working extended long hours at Brixton police station and have had their rest days cancelled and although willing are extremely exhausted.

Sorry, not in the best taste. :(

members I think you are being a bit hard on pjnxi it is only a joke in the vein of Irish/Welsh/Scottish/English jokes we are all very used to, I am sure it was not meant in any racist way whatsoever. Everyone's nerves are a bit raw with what we have seen but I dont think pjmxi meant to cause offence even if the timing may have been better.

Interestingly I was talking to friend about the situation here, a local pub and shop were burned down and other premises ransacked 10 minutes from where I live, and the best way we found of dealing with the shocking horror of events was to joke about them. This happened after the third day of looting / vandalism / murder and released some of the tension we felt. Not sure of the purpose of Pinxi's posting though.

It was just a joke! It was not a racist remark,

My niece was telling me about a song that has been doing the rounds something like this.

On the foruth day of rioting my true love sent to me,

A pair of Nike trainers, a Greggs open sandwich, a brand new laptop, and a Samsung HD TV

I do not think she is racist or rioter, it was lighthearted.

There are always jokes about events, be it the death of a well known person, an earthquake, etc. etc.

I was speaking to one of my friends from the Police Force and he said I'm looking forward to the overtime pay.

Even in the midst of all the gloom surrounding the riots. A touch of humour is welcome.

Don't take any heed of the politically correct, dull, melancholics on this forum !

Nice to see no comment from Dutch Crusader about the poor state of the UK versus Netherlands. lol

For a lot of people, dealing with traumatic events is done by telling or listening to jokes or humour. It's one of the ways we cope.....

I am prone to this myself, for example...whilst lying in a hospital bed, smashed to smithereens...hardly a piece of my body not bruised or broken...i still managed a few jokes...albeit not very good ones...but it was just my way of coping. Once grief has been expressed the usual next step is to introduce humour....after all, all the 'wise ones' say...laughter is the best medicine...

However in the same breathe....i am absolutely devastated by what has happened and is still happening, as i am sure the OP is too....

It's human instinct to use humour to help deal with difficult or upsetting situatiions, we all do it. I remember a particular joke from the 80's after the oil rig disaster off the scottish coast .....

What's got 4 legs and goes woof?

Piper Alpha

I was told that ny a roustabout who'd worked on the rig the month before it exploded. He lost friends in the disaster.

Lighten up folks, no-one condemns the looting or the violence, but it was a funny joke

it is very clear that what you regard as a 'funny joke' is not universally shared.. jokes involving the tragic deaths of folks are 'well dodgy'.. and say more about the 'SoH' of the person concerned..

@ nmsg 15, Geejay: (...) Nice to see no comment from Dutch Crusader about the poor state of the UK versus Netherlands. lol (...)

▶ Yeah, "lol" ("laughing out loud"). Amsterdam and no other towns/cities in the Netherlands were not burning in the past days. Nor where there 5 innocent dead people, 100+ brave, injured police men, millions of damage in the Netherlands.

Does it really make you feel a "great, better Brit" to write such a xenophobic line? Sad man, in my opinion.

You appear to be 'confused' ..

1/ I think Hans is quite right to 'mock' our current inability to control youths who seem to think they are above the law.....

2/ >>I think he's a bit miffed at coming second to that aviva guy<< How did you know that I have a pension dive bombing with them...?

Cygap..

if you find 'jokes' about recent tragedies 'funny' I wouldn't be too quick at describing those who don't as 'miserable... it's all about the appropriate time passing ... Never heard too many jokes told by complete strangers at funerals of folks dying violently ... must have led a sheltered life..

... not funny if it was one of your family dead and you were burying them today or your family now without a home and no belongings

whatever floats your boat ... a joke off others misfortunes is pretty low - trouble is those that died it is final for them they wont ever get to augh again !

Well that touched a nerve didn't it. Hans... Pot and kettle spring to mind. My comment was a light-hearted reference to your continual mockery of all things British. It seems you can only give it, not take it. Now that is sad.

This original witty comment by pinxi was not directed at the human tragedies of the riots at all but at the situation in general and Argos in particular. Some of the reactive posts here show a singular lack of perception of this by some contributors.

Rather some contributors have a 'perception deficit' re what is common sense as to 'timing' ... timing makes for a good joke from a comedian.. the timing of the posting of this 'joke' was ( IMHO) lousy..

It is rather 'sad' that the OP has now taken Geejays somewhat bizarre condoning as some sort of 'encouragement' .. :(
