We decided to take a stroll along Girne Harbourside last evening. What a shock, this beautiful and historic harbour has been turned into the home of loud thumping music, giant football screens and being stopped every few steps by 'touters' for restaurants. So sad that it should have come to this. Surely those who feel the need to watch football whilst on holiday can do it elsewhere (if it is so important to them) and how about some traditional music for a change in keeping with the setting.

Still lovely and relaxing at Chimera, at the quiet end of the harbour, by the castle.

Agree about the screens and music and the grab a toy machines.

I have to agree, we used to love walking around this beautiful harbour - it must be the prettiest on the Mediterranean - but for the past few years don't bother going there because of the pestering...

It really is a shame.....

Why not share your thoughts with the tourism ministry or the belediye office. I did the other year cos I got fed upwith the touters, and so did a lot of other people, and the touting stopped. Obviously if no one complains nothing will change. tell the Tourism authorities thatyou come here to enjoy thhe timeless beauty and ethnicity of the place etc, etc.

it could work. having a moan on this board gets a lot of sympathy but doesn't change anything.

if enugh of you feel strongly, why don't I write something to share but i need your tthoughts and names to do it.

You COULD get things changed.

Blackbird; Try the Belediye (Municipality - where you pay the water bill). I, for one, will do so on Monday. Lets have all those who can, go in and make a complaint on Monday! The only problem is, the municipality will only take notice if you live in their area...

It is worth a try bigOz. People can say how they love to come tothee Harbour and bring their friends and encourage tourists and spend money and go home and talk about it...... lay it on. After all it is true. The fact that you don't live in the area should not matter, what DOES matter is that you CARE aboout the area.

please let me know how you get on. do I feel an article coming on? should offer to come with you, but tied up on Monday (metaphorically), but a photo of a smiling Government worker saying 'we will sort it out' would be a good one. anyone going to take one.

So, Blackbird are you here or 'in the valleys' (well, Llangollen - and I can say it without losing any teeth - a friend of mine when trying to say 'Llan' in true Welsh style had her teeth fly out of her mouth. dyna neis!

I shall try my best to talk to the Mayor Marion - I gave up talking to clerks long time ago - I will keep you posted.

I stayed in Llangollen on 2-3 occasions, on my trips to Wales, when I was still a student - what a pleasant little place it was. I think on at least one occasion there was some kind of a folk dance show or competition but cannot remember when now (I think it was late 1970's or early 1980's). I loved Wales and the ever friendly Welsh people!

Such a shame, Yorg I know of a few Cypriot owners , Its a really beautiful place and beleive me if you go to harbours anywhere you do get enticed in. Italy, Greece, Spain, Malta, even USA.BigOz, LLangollen is beautiful and it does hold one of the biggest festivals, in fact the one Pavarotti was discovered, its called the Eisteddfod. People come from all over the world to take part and you are so right the welsh are so very friendly.

Marion, as you know we tried to stop the Belediye dumping rubbish at what used to be another beauty spot at the Malatya Waterfall. Stopped for a while after intervention but now started again, so I do feel that they say what they feel you want to hear and then do nothing. I will write to the Ministry of Tourism but I suspect nothing will change.

My family and I took our three dogs for a walk ON LEADS down around the harbour a few weeks ago and as we walked through the town we were charged several time with dogs off lead maybe they were street dogs maybe they were with irresponsible owners who dont care I dont know but there was one big dog who was very aggressive who charged at me and went for my dog I quickly pulled her away and it just managed to nip her someone called it back and it ran off down the road, never again. Im sick of not being able to take my dogs out without coming face to face with off lead dogs many are with their owners but dont give a toss, as for the touts at the harbour it annoys me you cant go for a nice walk and look at the boats without being set on if we want a drink if we want to eat and the rubbish that comes out their mouths to get you in their restaurant is really pathetic I dont go down there now unless its absolutely necessary.

Yorg

I normally agree with most of the things you write but I will have to disagree with you on the this, all but 2 are run and owned by Cypriots. They may have turkish waiters but the only 2 that are run and owned by Turkish are the 6 brother restaurants. One on the far end of the Harbour and one up the little tree lined road.

I also have an office in the harbour and that is run by myself and husband so it is also Cypriot run.

Do have to agree though the seed eating brigade drive us all crazy, those things are impossible to sweep up.

Ha, I guessed Yorg was using his usual misinformed bluster (what he calls facts) to try and pull a fast one. So all but two are Cypriot owned and run... so it's not the fault of those nasty Turks...

Really some of the anti-Turkish sentiment expressed on this board is scandalous in it's lack of verisimilitude.

I agree with many of the sentiments. But equally I wouldn't want it to become some kind of over renovated, soulless place. I have always felt safe walking around the harbour. Look at the south where there has been reports of gang violence in Potaras.

Re : Title of thread - "The destruction of beautiful Girne Harbour"

Maybe a few annoyances, but hardly "destruction".

Re : Messages 5 and 6, concerning the behaviour of the Turkish men

I certainly have no objection to seeing men walking arm in arm: Having lived in Istanbul for many years, I also occasionally touch the elbow of a close male Turkish friend if I feel it's appropriate. In Britain and clearly here, too many men are too insecure in their sexuality and thus feel such behaviour is only associated with homosexuals.

FYI, I was sitting along the harbor wall, the bit that goes out past the lighthouse, having a beer, a plain clothes cop (poser) came up to me flashed his ID and said it is illegal to drink beer anywhere around here, I pointed out that everyone on the wall had beers (50+)and where is the signpost.

He wasn't aggressive but repeated again, and walked off. so there you have it. :"t is yasak to drink alkohol" anywhere near the harbour.

Good concept, enforce it then, also get those seed munchers too. there is a sign that says no seed with skins allowed, what amazes me is that, when these mainlanders walk off, they either throw their bottles on to the rocks or in the ocean, there are bins within 5 feet of them, I pointed this out to the plain clothes butch dude, his reply "belediye 's problem",

Oh boy, I just lov e some of the sense of humour some of you have! I guess it is the way that one sees life! As to Malatya and rubbish - yes, I see the lorries go by daily filling in the ravine by the once beautiful waterfall, while the other end of the village iss a 'no dumping rubbish' sign. so it is a bit of a schizodi village.(and of course the lorry drivers are just doing their job and they want their pay to put food in their bellies. And I know that all too often complaints fall on deaf ears, but just sometimes someone listens and surley it is worth chipping away at the block(mayor, council, Tourism etc) as just sometimes it has an impact. don't give up folks. It is the old 'evil prevails while good men stand by and do nothing. So do have a go, and let me know. Let's make a story and I will give it also to Kenan Atakol who is very involved in environmental issues. It might do nothing - but it could do SOMETHING.

I was speaking with some French tourists on their first visit here they have been to the south and would return there here they said is like a garbage dump with litter & broken bottles every where.

Sworn at and abused by restaurant touts (2 of them speak fluent Turkish but spoke English )when walking by the harbour the WILL NOT RETURN to the north but will visit the south again ! as it is so clean with nice beaches.

Some of the restaurant/shop owners in harbour I know..............none are CYPRIOT.

I owned 3 shops in uk at onepoint, only one right out, other 2 lease.

I wouldn't expect you to understand that either.

However,if you like turks so much, how come you don't live in turkey?

there is nosuch thing as 'I have a problem with turks'.............in turkey..............then again you wouldn't know what that is,you just like to sit in front of your pc pretending you know and understand all.

As for money coming ove............consider it as part rent for accupying my country.............but you wouldn't know or understand what that is either..............perhaps get something to keep yourselves accupied with and leave Cyprus to Cypriots to sort out.........you've got your cheap properties.............what else do you want?

One man's occupier is another man's protector, and, of course' protecting'one's homeland from being overtaken' was exactly what the Turks did in 1974. Up to now the TRNC does not have many other protectors

Hum. I went for a walk down the harbour tonight and I didn't get herrassed by the waiters. I haven't visited cyprus in 5 years...1 thing I did notice was that it definetly has a much more international feel to it than before, saw some Italian tourists and french.

I grew up in Brazil and believe me compared to Brazil it is a very very safe environment. I know people in the south who feel afraid to walk alone at night in places like Protaras (check spelling).

Hum, I also got the impression that there's a lot more Turkish influence in Cyprus than before. I mean the ice cream guy dressed in traditional turkish clothing, the simitci tea bar (tea drinking is a thing of Turkey not Cyprus...also simit).

Re : msg 46 - "Tea drinking is a thing of Turkey, not Cyprus"

I wish it was more a thing of Cyprus - After having spent many years on the mainland, drinking (demli) tea in the traditional narrow (ince belli) glasses is something I really miss - Unfortunately my in-laws only ever drink Turkish Coffee. However, just recently we've befreinded a mainland family living two or three doors down the road from us ... and they always seem to have freshly brewed çay

We had friends over for the first time the other week and when we went to the harbour one evening they absolutely loved it! The screens can be a little distracting, but apart from that it was lovely.

We have been here for over 10 years and, although it has changes a lot, we still love going down there as well.

We didn't get hassled at all - the waiters would approach us and we would just say 'no thanks' and turn away and that was the end of that. If you're in a good mood you can have a little chat with them as well - they are normally up for a good laugh and a bit of banter. Some people need to chill out a bit in my opinion!

All I know is that when tourists from 'Ship Inn' walk to the bottom of our road, hoping it leads to a handy beach [which it does] and are then confronted by a Turkish soldier, carrying a gun, and get waved back [politely, but curtly], they trudge back up the road declaring they'll never set foot in TRNC again!

Imagine how their word is spread when they get home to their various countries - hardly good PR for TRNC!

Go on - say they should have known the situation in TRNC.

Unfortunately, most tourists don't!

Possibly locals take the harbour for granted, it is a very special place, perfectly formed and a jewel in the med as far as I can see, I would love to be sitting there right now with friends supping a glass of wine/coffee and watching the hustle and bustle of life......cant wait to return........x

Girne harbour is the 'jewel in the crown' for the TRNC tourist industry and the number one picture when advertising, yet the reality doesn't match the hype. It may look great but it's all about the experience when visiting.

The comments about being pestered by touts whether for boat trips or restaurants or the grubby state of the surroundings hardly do justice to the TRNC.

Yorg, it's symptomatic of your posting style to accuse anyone who doesn't agree with you of not knowing what they are talking about. You have been told that all but two business in the harbour are Cypriot owned and run by someone who is very definitely in the know... Your response is simply to get ruder and ruder. It's not the sign of somebody winning an argument.

any tourist place you go to you will get pestered by touts, on any greek island and I am sure in turkey too, but they are good natured with it soI dont take offence, just enjoy the banter........I still stand that Girne harbour is beautiful and you have to go a long long way to beat it...... I never tire of the experience and although a bit more pricey than other places it is worth the extra to eat there and savour the atmosphere...........x

Having said that I love the Harbour and its restaurants and being pestered, one waiter told me he was my turkish delight which made me roar with laughter, lovely people, lovely food etc and I don't care if they are all Turk mainlanders because at least they know how to serve you and they are not sulky, rude and downright objectionable.

Message 59, Tenakoutou, well I find that strange because if they are tourists from the usual run of the mill, i.e. from a Tour company then they would have a Tour rep who should be telling them where to go and not to go. If they are acquaintances of the owner or heard of the Ship Inn from London, I'm sure the owner or his staff would/should have forewarned them.

Why tourists should say that they would never set foot in TRNC just because they have seen a soldier....then yes they should have done their homework before they went.

So you've mentioned 3... and one of those is not in the Harbour. Funnily enough also not the ones who tout for business either.. thus further demonstrating that you've missed the point.

Re: Msg 71 - "Simit Dunyasi, nargile bar, ... "

Regardless of whether they are run by Cypriots or not, what is there about these establishments that one can seriously object to? Besides as Groucho pointed out, Simit Dunyasi is not really in the old harbour, is it Yorgozlu ?

Personally, I love to eat simit and cheese with a glass or two of tea. Maybe you should try it Yorgozlu. It might help you to realise that the Turks could enrich your "motherland's" cuisine and culture

It seems that yorgozlu does not know where the old harbour is... as you confirm Crumpy, Simit Dunyası is not in the old harbour and in any case they can hardly be accused of persistent touting for business, so it would appear they are setting a good example to those establishments that do pester passers-by.

They don't trail after passers-by emploring them to enter their establishment.

Which is what this thread is about...

yorgozlu, you raised the spectre that this was as a result of them being Turks and therefore not knowing how to behave like Cypriots. It has now been blown out of the water but you are having none of it preferring, as you do, to continue peddling your animosity to Turks based on a falsehood, namely that Cypriots do not hold truck with such behaviour.

Still think you are winning this argument?

Nargile Bar is run by Salih who is a Cypriot and is also the owner of Harbour club, Harbour Cafe, Harbour Souvenir and Harbour boat trips. And Simit is Not in the Old harbour, the Harbour Stops at the play ground. A harbour is where boats Moore, not just a sea front.

so,you appear right at the 'harbour when you want to be there?

Nargile is run by a 'turk' friend of mine,Bersan, however if you want to be that specific, you can just say the whole place 's been taken over by 'turks' and be done with it.

you can carry on calling me racist all you like..........and dislike my behaviour all you like, thats just your opinion and your problem,I know what I know and from the sound of it you prefer to take others comments as gospel, purely because 'you' don't like my comments and thoughts.

in english you say who gives a s**t..................try learning some local language first,so you can mingle in and learn for yourself, instead of being typical arrogant brit.and have the cheek to refer to me as arrogant.

Bersan, is now at the Rockanne's and has not run Nargilem since last year, I know him as well and my office is next to Nargilem.

I have never called you racist, But as I have had an office in the Harbour for Nine years now, and have lived in Cyprus for 15 years married to a Turkiish Cypriot ( not a Turk with a Kimlik card) I think I do have some knowledge of what is going on down here.

A lot has changed in the harbour, I don't agree with all of it, but the harbour is not just for Tourists, the weekends are buzzing down here with Locals, Turks and tourists I think it has something for everyone, you have the bar scene at one end and the quiet end the castle side. have to say I perfer the quiet end.

The waiters are lot more polite this year then past years and will leave you alone with a simple no thank you.

kiwikid;

Apologies as my response was to msg 75.

I was not refering to you or your knowledge regarding the harbour, nor I was refering to the 'waiters' but mainly pointing out that in general the place has been taken over by turks, and I'm not one single bit happy about it.

If that makes me racist,so be it.

I have good few turkish friends and they all know how I feel about the situation. What gets up my nose is ones with no knowledge of Cyprus sitting in front of pc and telling me about MY country...........and then, most probaply getting up and jumping into his cheaply bought pool.

As for Bersan,I've not seen him since he's left the club but was told he was running both.

Yorg, you don't know me, you don't know what I do, or whether I speak Turkish but you now try to deflect the argument away from the thread topic to score cheap points a la NN.

That's not the way to win an argument... you have been shown to be wrong and you apologise to Angela. I had told you that and as Angela had pointed out you were wrong and you get personal with me.

Before you start turning a thread into a tirade of a racist nature it would be best if you got your facts right. If you don't like the behaviour of the waiters in the harbour, that's for you to take up with them and their bosses but to make a racial slur out of it on here is low. It's one thing to wear your heart on your sleeve and entirely another to carry on the way you are going.

so please let us know who you are........and your relation to Cyprob-Cyprus,Cyprus-Turkey(turks) are??? ........and since when you've been visiting the old Kyrenia harbour?.............without accusing me of being racist or talking 'without' facts!

Yes,it is up to 'me' to take up with them and I do,and if they don't like it,the way out is the same way they came IN........with or without their SEEDS................this bit would be edited by simbas if I wrote what's in my mind.

One minute you are talking about the owners - next about those making use of the harbour for recreation, make your mind up who it is you have problem with!

I'm not accusing you of buying cheap and jumping in your pool... that's you. I don't need to know you but to make personal remarks about other members I suggest that you ought least to have some knowledge as to do otherwise is prejudice. I wouldn't take your lead from NN as he doesn't really know me from Adam.

We have lived here for 6 years and have studied the language for six years. We don't spend all our time at the harbour but we have run the gauntlet on occasion. Having done so, I didn't come to a conclusion based on ethnicity that the problem is restricted to Turkish mainlanders - somehow you did and voiced your opinion.

Having been proved wrong you then get nasty, your problem. You don't let anybody air an opinion about your country, you already have all the answers and won't listen to reason.

I'm not sure where you think this pathetic riposte leaves your argument but I'd hazard a guess that most members would think it proof positive that you are a lost cause. With s.f.b.

I don't abuse them I simply tell them that we are full. They desist and we proceed without further fuss. It's no problem and is all done with an air of light banter and a smile. They do get the hint.

You don't get the hint that your headlong dive into the abyss of racial hatred is not acceptable.

it is not for you to decide on weather I can or cannot comment/behave the way I do,simply because you are NOT Cypriot but just a visitor............same as those 'turks'..........only difference being........you(not as individual) do not come here under those terms and work illegaly(well, most of you anyway).

As for me being a lost case.......................try another one

'abyss of racial hatred'..........................call it whatever you may..............makes no difference all the while you don't have a clue of actual meaning..........try to get someone to translate the actual meaning of my last sentence re87.

Yorg,

I have to congratulate you on a thoroughly well reasoned factually based argument. That not being Cypriot means nobody is allowed to express an opinion. A victory for common sense and decency.

You are without doubt a shining example to be set to your countrymen and should be held up as a beacon of light in this dark world.

Or you could just boil your bum....

I wonder if Yogo had the same thoughts when living in the UK, all without British passports should be banished back to where they came ?? Bet he just got on with things grateful or maybe NOT..It seems to me that once he gets the Turks back home it will be his thinking that we should all follow...Poor man maybe exceptace of what today has to offer might help. lol..

Spider;

Do some re-search regarding those "living in the UK, all without British passports".You'll find that most of those are also 'turks',claiming 'political asylum'.............then again you can always blame France for playing pass the buck, for that,or the so called basic human rights................whatever that means,

Message3 - sounds dishonest!!

Is this the sort of dishonest attitude you should be promoting when people are being duped out of their pensions and savings??

And there is an element of racism in your anti turk rhetoric.

Without Turkeys intervention in "74 you would probably not be around to spout the nonsense that you do.

You just need to learn the difference between acting like a twerp and sounding like an idiot.

Just to recap, you made an outrageous racial slur which has been demonstrated to be wrong.

Instead of admitting your mistake you then declare it matters not as you are the only Cypriot commenting worth listening to and as such, you declare yourself an unimpeachable source of correctness (always a bad sign this, bordering as it is on madness).

That's about as delusional as one can get.

Keep up the good work, your country can only get stronger from such an attitude.

Luckily the majority of your countrymen and women appear to be bit more discerning in their thought processes.

No doubt you come up with another pearl of wisdom?
