I have just read the write up about the water shortage on the island.

I totally agree that we should all concerve water, that excessivly watering your garden and filling pools is not only greedy, but thoughtless.

The article states that people are ''stealing'' water.

We have lived in ''lovely'' Lapta for four years, our average water usage is 3 tons each month.

We have actually paid for ten tons every month for the past four years. Plus the usual extras.

I thought the definition of stealing was taking something you haven't paid for.

How can that be stealing if you don't go over our ten ton?

I was in my village on sunday and a local person was hosing down the front of her house and the pavement outside and the road then the pavement either side for about 10 feet each way. What a waste of water we went around the corner and saw the same thing at another house.

Here in Esentepe, we,ve only had mains water on for 3 short periods over the last week.

just enough to fill our water tank, not sure what the problem is, if there is one.

I have seen that too but I think these people have their own well, they are legally allowed to do this but I still think it`s a waste.

There are people who steal water by connecting their hoses to the water line before it goes through the metre then fill up their pools. I know someone who does this, just waiting to take picture when it happens.

There is no problem with water in Lapta at the moment. And all the swallows I know get water tankered in for their pools, have separate tanks for the irrigation tanks for their gardens, and the ones who don't have just have a walk about and see how many of their plants have died! We went 11 weeks last year with no water in Lapta and it cost us a fortune plus still had to pay for 10 tons a month which we didn't get!

Water shortage.. how could this be... ? AJ posted a story ( in 2005 ) on a now defunct board telling us that Turkey was starting a project to pipe over water and it would be completed in 27 months...

Did the pipe break.. ? ;)

A good start would be to fix the many water leaks around Girne that we see on the road, often fixed and then leak agian a few weeks later.

Yes IbrahimAbi, you have a good point.

My point is, why are the Beli accusing people of stealing water when they are being charged for what they

aren't even using?

I think if they charged a certain price for up to 4 ton, then a bit dearer per ton for up to 8 ton, then so on,

maybe more people would think about concerving more water.

I'm pretty certain that the Alsancak Beli only charge their customers for what tonage they use.

Maybe they do have a well but it is still an incredible waste and one day the well will run dry then it will be oh dear i wonder why but at least the roads and pavements will be clean for about half an hour.

Surely all the water, apart from desalination plants, comes from the same underground sources. Therefore, why is it okay for people with wells to use the water with impunity? And doesn't the water that is tankered in deplete the aquifers also?

tip for you, when I shower I use the one over the bath, keep the plug in, bucket the water every morning and evening to my garden, plants enjoy the shampoo and conditioner, shower gel etc, my swimming pool is almost the first tile below the top, dont fill it until it is in danger of falling below the hole where my pool man needs to fit his hose thing. I live in Lapta and pay for 10 tons, and am exasperated at some locals watering their concrete drive, no mater how much water they pour over it, it will never grow!!!!!!!

Hi Flower fairy, i myself have always been respectful of water, even here in the forever raiiny UK. Do you think filling up a site pool with 18 tonnes of water 2 maybe 3 times a week is justifiable in the TRNC, this supposedly is due to evaporation but i have my doubts?, this id disgraceful, due to sever water shortages, and should not be allowed, i wonder what the belidayse would say!! I myself would rather use the sea and leave all this water for the more necessary uses. x

swimming pools should not only be taxed, owners should be fined for leaving them full and unattended for months on end to become mozzie breading grounds.....

Then Flightholiday, maybe you can repost your original posting regarding Property advice from British Foreign Office from Monday 13th October 2006 for those that did not believe that the advice was given.

swimming pools are taxed as far i know you have to register them, the best option i think would be make them illegal after all we do live on an island so a beach is not that far away !!!!

msg27 Given the choice of paying Tax on pools, along with maintenance bills (which should be compulsory) or swimming in the effluent polluted Med,I would rather pay the money.......... There should be more "Water Parks".........There are Islands with great beaches, but this is not one of them...

in all my time living here, i have tried to conserve water.

i think it was foolhardy for the planners to allow so many new builds with swimming pools.

maybe the pipeline from Turkey will happen and solve our problem.

According to my water tanker delivery driver, the Turkish pipeline is well underway and all the contracts to bring the water to NC have been signed and it will be completed by end of 2014. As to the water table, I am no expert in this matter but my understanding of the subject is that the island and mainland Turkey's watertables are actually connect under the sea. I was lead to believe that the agricultural areas around Erenkoy and Guzelyurt are actually fed from the Turkish mainland as the water tables there rise upward to well depth. As to swimming pools, as I have previously stated, there is no reason why sea water could not be used, although I believe it would have to be treated to lessen the salinity. Swimming pools are already taxed albeit only 50 Tl per anum but then the house you live in is only taxed at 1TL per square meter, so an average 150 SM dwelling pays only 150TL pa, which means that relatively the pool is heavily taxed.

msg32 Using sea water in a pool is one thing, but here reducing salinity is the least of the worry...removing macerated effluent is the more problematic obstacle...........

bazzagirl, put a pint glass of water on the steps on the pool. fill the glass to the same level as the pool.

Leave for 24 hours, if the level of the pool water is less than the level in the glass, you have a leak.

Hope this helps,
