Absolutely shocking. It had to have been an unburnt cigarette.

Thankfully no one injured, with flames getting higher(very high) rather than spreading. Could have been a lot worse as there are a lot of dry plants/grass around the area where it started, on the edge of the road(next to the old Goldlite Butique).

Fire-brigade came around 10 minutes after we managed to put it OUT. Luckily a neighbour had a hose we used to put water in buckets(as it wouldn't stretch to other side of the road).

Some very careless individuals about. The area is very lucky.

I've seen people with cigs do it before, carelessly chucking what they think is a finished cigarette into the bushes, in which they laughed at me for making a point of going back to stamp it out.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise that it can spread.

Especially in this heat.

It should be a prisonable offence.

Couldn't agree more Bill.

Even after we thought it was all out, the red smouldering still continued to rise and cause flames.

Very worrying.

The same can be said for discarding glass bottles in the undergrowth. They can magnify the heat of the sun causing fires, even within motor vehicles.

It is just a shame that people are not more considerate, having the very bad experience of the Karsiyaka fire last year we are more fire aware and have sprayed weedkiller around the outside of our property to cut the risks and hopefully save our house. We have also put in extra water pipes around the property so that all sides are covered and yet a neighbour who was also screaming last year has allowed the weeds to grow and dry. There is no excuse when you have a ride on lawnmower not to keep your garden tidy it just shows how selfish some people can be. This neighbour does come on here sometimes so i hope you are reading this, you know who you are and i will not stop until you clean your garden, you are not only putting yourself in danger but me also, maybe you dont have the flashbacks of the wall of flames but i do.

"It had to have been an unburnt cigarette"

Amazing, did you actually see someone discard the cigarette, if so you should have reported them. Or did you see a dog-end at the seat of the blaze?

Or are you just assuming it was a careless smoker?????

The cigarette and the glass bottle examples are just accidents, albeit carelessness from the individuals concerned. What is not accidental is the mindless moron who decides to have a bonfire in August, which not only pollutes the whole village but is a disaster waiting to happen.

Michael it is illegal to light any fires. The forestry are very strict about this.

We had a big fire near us in Alsancak about a month ago on a peace of scrub ground, it was spreading fast, turned out it was a local farmer burning the grass, how ridiculous is that this time of year, bet he was not prosecuted. It started spreading to neighbours garden. 3 fire engines came to put it out.

Teatime,

It was around 11pm at night, right on the edge of the road where the older gentleman(with the hose) said he thought he saw some guys on a bike smoking just before it caught fire. Also, bear in mind it is dark at this time of night. He he told me he saw people smoking as he was filling my bucket. I lost it, but the most important thing to do is focus on getting the smouldering remains fully out.

As I said in msg 3, I have seen a student chuck their cig into a bush off the main road before, and he laughed at me for being concerned.

Who/what else do you think could have started it at that time of night? Can you imagine if it happened any later when everyone was asleep?

Some people on this forum really need a reality check.

Unfortunately, there are bigger pyromaniacs around than those who discard ciggie butts. We had a neigbour who decided to burn packing cases mid Summer and the flames were going over the roof of his villa in a strong wind. When I told him to put it out because if the police arrived he could be looking at a prison sentence he replied "do not worry I only have a few more to burn". I told him he had no neighbour's mandate to choose our risks and put the firking thing out now. Another Cypriot neighbour moved his BBQ behind his wooden garage as the strong wind was inconvenient ! Luckily another Cypriot neighbour had a water truck and opened the valve at ground level to make a "fire break" but many donums of land and crop were destroyed plus of course his garage. We have had so many close shaves that we now ensure that when telephoning emergency services/police we stress to them the need to fully turn on piped water supplies so that the fire can be fought until the Fire Brigade arrive.
