Obviously, they are so cossetted in their 'safe' little world that they either haven't got a clue, or are in complete denial at what's really going on outside of it. Otherwise, they'd admit they've failed with their 'softly, softly, policies', and whether they like it, or not, resign themselves to the fact that unless corporal punishment [caning] is re-introduced, the decline will only inevitably continue - as if it hasn't reached 'crisis proportions' already!

Msg 4, I was canned in school several times it didn't stop it happening again, I was never hit at home yet I never turned into a thug or bully destroying other peoples property. Parents are responsible for their children and bringing them up to be decent members of the community, if they did this schools etc wouldn't need to put up with such rubbish behaviour from kids. Too many families have had both parents working full time and the kids farmed off to someone else and parents are too tired to bother or fight with them when they come home so the kids do what the like. Anything for an easy life, seems to be the way of things these days.

"Respect" is another word which has been hijacked by the feckless. How do those peddling drugs, promoting "bling", bedecked in gold jewelry, cruising around in blacked out, cromed limos, command respect from the young generation ? Providing accommodation in offices such as Courts of Justice and Employment exchanges where drug addicts can, with impunity, have a "hit" or they might "kick off" to me is total surrender of any sense of decency or a will to return the UK to what is was before it became the dustbin of the world.

Currently, these yobs realise they hold the upper hand as regards 'power' - it's called 'anarchy'. The only method to instil respect for the Law is to disillusion them. Demonstrate to them in the only language they understand that there IS a higher authority and that they had better recognise this fact, or face the legal consequences, which should be arbitrary corporal punishment - i.e., a sound thrashing on the bare buttocks with a wetted Rattan cane! This is the ONLY way to humble them into showing due respect for the Law and society at large.

problem is that at home parents are not allowed to chastise their children, teachers again are not allowed to discipline the children, when they go off the rails even the courts do not discipline them, they have had their own way for so long, no one has actually said "No" and meant no.............

So it is wrong to take a plasma TV from a busted up branch of Currys, but right to falsely claim the same telly against expenses? Greedy bankers get their bonuses despite being bailed out by the state after they drove their banks to the edge of the abyss. Traders still sell derivatives, futures and whatevers; still dine out at Michelin starred restaurants and still run the gauntlet as they drive their shiny new Porsches home when way over the drink drive limit. Members of Parliament still brazenly abuse their expenses system - and are still not subject to the pension fears of mere voters, be it public or private sector. Keep your far right drivel about rioters and looters. Fix the problem from the top. The example set by the leaders of UK society is unforgivable. Place blame where it belongs.

May I congratulate you on such an excellent and well thought out and expressed post, 'basil'! Unfortunately, all throughout history, the kings and barons have drunk the wine and the peasants have done all the work and the fighting. When the latter caused uprisings, these were brutally put down. Unfortunately, human nature doesn't change. What has changed, relatively recently, has been society's attitude towards the 'bourgoisie'.

Basil I think your last paragraph sums up very real problems that England has . The social unrest that England is experiencing needs to be addressed by your government in a sensible and coherent fashion and not with the usual knee jerk reactions that so often characterises Wesminster politics.

paddywack on the contrary, the mood of the nation is for decisive action is needed and if the politicians have any savvy about them they will get tough on these issues and I think the populous would be behind them.
