Hi finally after 10 months we have received a satisfactory offer for our beautiful home and a decision hasto be made so in no particular order there are 3 questions for you to think about.

1 do we downsize and stay in the UK and have loads of holidays.

2Do we move out to trnc and rent a property ther

3.I may upset some of you with this one do we move to the Greek side and rent a property there.

RENT where you think you might like and if you are considering the 'rump' RoC ( 'south' ) as well - rent there first.

It is FAR easier to move into another EU nation and you'll be able to drive your stuff over - 'south to north'

Sadly the 'north' isn't covered by EU regulations and you'll need all sorts of paperwork, even blood tests to be allowed to reside...

You'll be able to explore the 'north' at leisure from the 'south' and make your mind up, accordingly.

Good luck

If I was in your position I wouldn't hesitate, downsize and stay in the UK, you can then holiday whenever, wherever for as long as you want, while still having a home that is safe! and which could give you a rental income, to enable you to see the world

Whatever you decide Good Luck!

First thing I did before answering, I looked at your age. A mere whipper snapper.

so suggest:

1. keep a base in the uk (down size)

and

2. Rent for 3 months in the North

then

3. Rent for 3 months in the south

this

keeps your options oen and kees a foot in the property market too.

if

You don't like either north or south, you can rent somewhere else.

wish I was your age again, what an adventure you could have.

to explain. I have a secondary keyboard which like me is very old. Sometimes even though I hit the keys, they do not print, hence the above. I wish I had Laura laptop back..........she was a lady and knew how to behave.

re msg 8 misunderstood

I 'missed' the option to downsize' in the UK ..

Yup - agreed - do that and rent it out and then check out CY.. 'south' first for the legal / logistic reasons previously given - not out of preference !

Totally agree with msg 8 and 10; KEEP a base in the UK and rent it out. Then rent somewhere on the island, at least you can return if you don't like it, or when you need to. there are many in the TRNC who would like to return to the UK but cannot.

From someone who lived in Marsh Lane and now resides here in the trnc and have done four nearly 5 years.

Downsize, rent in the rump (Only If you can afford it. In other words look at the euro and the exchange rate) Then visit the north as often as you wish before making up your mind. You would still be able to rent in the north for a couple of months whilst still renting in the south, to take a look and get a good feel for the place.

Congratulations on at last completing, look forward to bumping into you soon

Cass, was 174 Marsh Lasne

Thanks for the replies if I am honest I really do not fancy the south but threw it into the equation to see what response I got.Assuming we did keep a small place here there are 2 further questions.

1Roughly what interest rates are being offered on deposit accounts?

2.I know this a difficult one but bearing in mind we are not heavy drinkers and would eat the local produce roughly in £sterling how much per annum for 2 of us would we need.

Msg 12 am I right in thinking your wife posts on here as Rowan and you both remember my Mother and myself?

The ideal wherever you go is to rent out a property in the UK so you have a base if overseas goes pearshaped. And rent abroad until you have learned the customs and climate of the country - eg a lovely house in the mountains may prove to be too far from the shops, doctors etc.Give it a year or two and you will have a better idea of what you want to do permanently.

But , while there are lots of complaint s about Estate Agents here, I and many others have worse horror stories about the treatment of houses by tenants and the carelessness of apparently reputable Agents in the UK. You really do need a VERY good, devoted and reliable friend or relative to keep an eye on things . One of the Agents I tried could not produce receipts to satisfy the Income Tax authorities, and a friend came back from a year's sabbatical to find her home has not only been trashed but used in a scam to defraud the local Council - and she was being held responsible

Msg14 I take on board what you say about letting agents but Newark is a very small town and I know most of them well so I think I should be okay.

You can get up to 8.25% on TL accounts but very little on sterling accounts

TL accounts have been good over the years but i would be a little wary at the moment as the GBP to TL rate is fluctuating more than it has in many years.

Deffo go for option 1. Although I live in the TRNC, one of the things that I really miss is the ability to travel further afield - travelling just about anywhere from Cyprus is very expensive !!

Stay in the UK, downsize and use the cash that you have released to travel to far flung places.

Msg 17. Agree with you there, we decided to stay in the UK we have 2 holidays in Turkey five weeks in NC at Christmas & New Year and a 2 week holiday in the UK every year and manage to have a good standard of living here, our decision was based mainly on the fact we didn't want to stay in one place too long and whether we could afford to live in NC and have the holidays in Turkey which we really enjoy.

Why would any contributor on this board which is to do with North cyprus keep recemmending the south as a first option. why post on here at all iif the north is so awful and to be avoided or treated as a last resort.

come and rent here for 3 months and then try the south, but remembr that Euroland is VERY expensiv e, and whatever you say about the north, it stll has a charm which has lingered on. the south has lost it.

But take a tip and don't burn your bridges! Many of us have, and so the options are more limited, but if you can downsize and come here, then the world is far more of 'your oyster' than having only one base.

If you are really sure about your Agent my advice would be to rent out a property in the UK. You will feel much more confident and less likely to panic when things to wrong (as they will) if you know you have a safe base.

Renting abroad will enable you to check out which areas you prefer. Simple things like losing winter sun from mountain shade, and where you can have a through breeze in summer make such a difference.

You really need a year at least on the Island to appreciate the difference between the over whelming summer heat and the cold wet winters - even then it is hard to remember January and complaining about the cold! Well at least we dont have to scrape ice off the windscreen!

In the UK sometimes the Ice on your windscreen means it's dry with sunshine!

Keep a little place in the UK (thank goodness I did)
