Can anyone tell me what the strange lights are that have been drifting over the sea over the past few nights? On Saturday night we thought we were watching a plane crashing into the sea and we were very concerned, until we noticed more of these very bright lights coming over. What is going on? Does anyone have any idea?

I noticed one last evening whilst 'star gazing' I believe it was a Chinese Lantern that some idiot may have launched. Why are they sold here? Such a fire hazard.

I have seen a number of chinese lanterns over the last 7 days - sure way to start a fire in the current conditions especially with heaps of dry garden waste and piles of dead grass (they should be banned from sale and use).

It was on Saturday evening, between 8-10 and 8-35pm - just before it got dark. One light looked like it was an airplane coming from Turkey. It seemed it get halfway across and then plunged into the sea. 15 minutes later, two more did exactly the same thing. Now I can understand why some people may think they are chinese lanterns - but 10 minutes later another flew in entirely the opposite direction before dropping intro the sea. If they were all lanterns then you'd expect them all to fly in the same direction with the wind, and not against it. VERY ODD!!!!!!!

I saw three or four flashes of light in the sky on Sat evening, but later about l0 or ll ,and not over the sea. They were so quick they were gone before I registered them and I thought it was my imagination. More like lightning or laser than fireworks.

Forgive my ignorance but what are Chinese Lanterns? Some kind of firework I assume. Used to be a time when you couldnt let off fireworks here without a Licence. I doubt if what I saw was either fireworks or aliens from outer space . Possibly the meteor shower, More like a flash of headlights or a laser beam - I dont usually see these from my garden but maybe it was a freak reflection.

Chinese Lanterns are paper lanterns (not fireworks), which I believe you light and they float upwards illuminated. I have never seen one in action, so don't know about the dangers. You used to be able to buy them in 'Mr Pound'.
