Probably a Renault 9 - prices from 1K GBP upwards. Very cheap to run - tax and maintenance. Good engines, look out for the state of the body work though as prone to rust. Spares prices are extremely cheap as copy parts are made in Turkey and widely available. Every back street garage knows how to fix them.

yes,age of the car is important.also,if over (domestic cars) 5 years of age,you must have the logbook in your name for minimum of 5 years.Age limit for commercials (ie.dual cabs) is 12 years.

Do please also take into account the time(days) you had spent in trnc, because if over 360 days over the last 2 years, you must pay the duties on arrival.

generally the older Renault models available in TRNC were made under licence in Turkey, so the parts are not strictly copy parts, and should be good quality

As the garage and forecourts here seem to put at least £2000+ on what would be considered the genuine price of a car, (taking into account the age and condition) how can you gauge the safety aspects of a car which is only £1000? Just trying to get my head round buying a car that cheap.

Tango! message 11

You see, that's how bad information starts!! "I've heard"!!! No I haven't been myself but I know plenty of people who have and they were pleasantly surprised as to the quality of the crossing. It depends entirely on which...

Tango 1 this was another comment from yourself decrying hearsay and yet you esposuse the same cynicsm about a vehicle you know nothing about.

Kindly butt out!

As a non resident, I decided to buy a car this month rather than keep on hiring every time I came out. I only had a budget of £2500 and although I thought that I could buy a decent car for that price having looked at prices on the TRNC car sales web sites, I was quite shocked at what I actually saw. Most of the cars were in a pretty poor condition and presented in a very dirty and untidy condition which was enough to put me off very quickly. Of all the cars that were advertised as having air conditioning, none actually had a/c that worked. In the end after a lot of searching around, I managed to find a 1993 Suzuki Swift that was basically clean and sound and which I got the vendor to get the a/c repaired and also to fit suitable rear seat belts. The car would have cost no more that £150-£200 in the UK but it cost me £2400. So just be aware of what to expect. I am now keeping my fingers crossed that I have not bought a load of trouble.

thank you twaddle, but I dont want to spend a fortune on a car that is only going to be used for a couple months a year. I know they are expensive , I wanted to bring a car out but having looked at all the post I still cant work out what tax you have to pay. and if you have to be a resident , everyone seems to say different things.

You do not need to be a resident. I can vouch for that as I have just registered the car and am not a resident myself.

ginty;

You do not have to be a resident in cyprus to bring a car out.You have your own home. However, the cost of buying a decent car here and importing your own are pretty similar. The only difference might be the car you bring over as 'better the devil I know'.

I can get a car shipped over for £500 but still unsure if the 40% tax is on the new price or the book price for that year and does it matter which port it comes into. also some say that you have to own it for 5 years from new and some say just five years, all very confusing, does anyone know.

Ginty,

Customs value the car on the age only (ie dont look at condition, miles etc). They use UK Glasses guide for their values. Dont forget once they have a basic value of your car they then calculate to % on the total value here (ie car+shipping costs). Then they add 5% army tax, VAT etc. Once you've paid that you will need to pay a registration fee and road tax for a year here.

Why no-one can give you an exact figure is that every car is different. I my opinion you're better off with a small car thats maybe lost lots of money in the UK but is popular here. eg Hyundai Accent, Suzuki Baleno, Ignis/Swift etc.

Good luck in what you decide

Basically it will cost you about 50% of whatever you paid in the Uk and the car cannot be over 5 years old. (I think or you must have owned it for a certain amount of time)..so if you paid 4k in UK the import taxes will be another £2000 bringing it up to 6k and your imported car will not have any guarantee which may have been applicable in the UK. It really is a no brainer in my mind.

These are only illustrative figures and I am sure someone can be a little more specific.
