but looking at old threads alot of members seem to have disappeared



were they banned or moved somewhere else ?

In my experience with forums philbailey there is nothing strange about it. It is normal for forum membership to ebb and flow and for members to come and go, some to reutrn after an absense and some to never return again. I have not participated in a forum anywhere on any subject where this has not been the case. The reason why a given member first decides to post on a forum and then later to stop posting are almost as varied as the members themselves are I suspect.
