Last night one of my friends was killed & another is now in Intensive Care in Lefkosa Hospital. They were hit by a speeding car which mounted the pavement whilst they were walking home after having just been to the Mosque.

I am so sad over this tragic incident & want to ask is there anything we can do to stop these cars speeding & driving without care so no more lives are lost! For example is there anyway we can group together to do a petition so the drivers get tougher sentences to deter them from this reckless driving or does anybody else have any sensible ideas, please?

My sympathies for the loss of your friend and best wishes for the recovery of the other.

It might sound like a silly idea, but something they were doing in New Zealand when I visted many years ago was marking the site of fatal car accidents with little crosses. As a visitor I was quite shocked at the huge numbers of these along the sides of roads all over NZ. They served as a constant and ever increasing reminder, I think, of the number of deaths caused in and by cars, both to those driving and to the wider community in general. I do not really know if they had much of an impact in reducing fatalites involving cars or not but I can see how they may well have help to shape and change peoples opinions and behaviour over time. I do not know if such a thing would be possible here, but maybe it could be and maybe it would make a difference.

Erolz like me you have been here long enough to know that nothing seems to stop the youngsters from driving fast and not wearing crash helmets on motor bikes. We have lost so many young recently including the son of Zet karting and if you think the amount of people that attended that funeral it would have made them stop and think but after a few days they just go back to normal. Tougher policing on the roads and parents that dont go out and buy their kids high power cars and bikes until they are old enough and responsible enough.

I know it is not just the young ones that cause the accidents but it just seems that every week another one dies.

Danish i am so sorry for your loss.

Thankyou everyone for your kind sympathies.

erolz - Thankyou this is the kind of response I was hoping for, some ideas on how to try & tap into people to start driving responsibly so we can reduce the fatalies.

Oh danish i am so sorry, i do hope the injured gentleman makes a full recovery, i will remember him in my prayers, yes something has to be done to maake drivers aware that speed kills, i do hope somethng is implemented soon, i lost my son last year in a similar accident a speeding truck killed him while he was on his bike riding to work he was only 28, so i know the pain and anguish his family are going through at the moment. God Bless

Yes CyprusLulz - this is the story, but badly translated.

bazzagirl - thankyou & I am so sorry to hear of your loss too.

andrew4232 - This time not on the phone - we are led to believe there were 2 cars racing each other.

In may this year the UN launched "The United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020". They have produced 'action plans' which can be found here

http://www.who.int/roadsafety/decade_of_action/plan/en/index.html

It would seem that Turkey has been involved in efforts along these lines as well. Some details here

http://www.euro.who.int/en/what-we-do/health-topics/noncommunicable-diseases/sections/news/2011/08/reducing-road-deaths-in-turkey-ministry-of-health-and-who-meet-to-discuss-achievements-of-the-road-safety-project

Maybe the TRNC could be included in future phases of this Turkish effort ?

Have just heard that the driver was drunk, well over the limit and is now in prison, best place for him.

What a waste and tragic loss of a life....so sorry for your loss of a friend and pain Danish. Do hope the injured friend makes a full recovery, both physically and mentally. Now, to also learn that the driver was drunk and well over the limit makes it all the worse.....my sympathy goes to all the families and friends affected by this 'accident'.

sorry to hear of your loss danish & i hope your friend recovers from this,my niece aged 18 was killed nearly 2 years ago by a drunken speeding driver in germany,i do think these drivers need better education but sadly some seem to forget everything once they are behind a wheel but they should be punished severly ,i wish your friend all the best in his recovery.

Crofter - Are you sure he was drunk? As us & family were told he was racing with another driver?

Thankyou for more supportive messages & I am sorry to hear of some of your similar loses. This is even more reason why I am trying to think of a solution now.

Erolz - Thanks again for more ideas. I will look closely at what you have posted & see if it possible for us to push this forwards in the TRNC.

Sorry to be pedantic in such tragic circumstances but speed does not kill otherwise racing drivers would not exist.

Bad driving kills !!

The standard of driving in TRNC like Turkey is horrendous so be extra vigilant.

Thankyou crofter for passing on this information to us, although it now makes the situation even more dispicable!
