How long should you be out of the country for

Have a friend whos residency is running out does not want to renew because going back to britain. How long do they need to get out of the country for, then come back in. I know this does not mean going to the south and back.

need to time things right, leave about a day before res runs out, return a few days later, (it will most likely be pointed out that res has expired), and get a 90 day visa.

Therfeore returing as a visitor.

If imigration asks, say will be re-applying, res ran out whilst our of the country, if have to cross to South, point out new 90 day visa at border as they will also question res expired.

so long as you leave before the 90 days, no problem, but remember, you are not guaranteed 90 days in the future, so if you want to stay I would say go for res, it's simple, cheaper than flying out (unless you do anyway) and I beleive the right thing to do if you actually 'reside' in NC.

it was just for the info. have some friends coming out. They are not sure howlong they want to stay so trying to weigh up if its worth res application or not.
