Just had a phone call from my partner who is in Bellapais right now, saying there is some kind of fire there, just below the Abbey. There are fire engines and crews in attendance. Do not have much more info that right now.

The helicopter is doing a marvellous job as always and is making progress with damping the fire down.

I bet they blame it on smokers instead of the tons of discarded broken bottles and rubbish in the ravine...

Message 9 - I totally agree, people should keep snide remarks to themselves. Any fire in TRNC during the summer months especially is likely to cause significant damage to the environment and maybe to the lives of the people.

Any updates would be appreciated as we live in Bellapais but had to come back to UK for a while. Naturally, we are concerned as would anyone be with homes nearby.

Dinner Dave, stop being an idiot, you wouldn't be joking if it was near your property !!!!

Fire in these conditions is no laughing matter.

Live short way below. Cannot hear helicopter anymore. Wife was up there and the fire was confined to the bottom of the ravine, so appears to be under control.

Hope no one was hurt, nor that anyone lost anything. fires are terrifying things - been through forest fires in Australia, and also know that the mountain over my way was devastated by fire some years ago (16?), So, as I say, I DO hope no one was hurt. anyone got an update?

The fire's been out for a while now, there's still some activity on our side of the ravine with fire trucks leaving but that's about all. A horrible reminder of what we went through up here 16 years ago..
