The South Electricity Authority (EAC) yesterday confirmed it had paid €4.5 million for power from the occupied areas.

EAC acting spokesman Yiannis Tsouloftas said the authority had issued a cheque to the Turkish Cypriot electricity company for the power it had supplied the Republic last Thursday.

The cheque was handed over to the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE), Manthos Mavrommatis, who in turn would give it to the Turkish Cypriot company, said Tsouloftas.

Tsouloftas was commenting on an article in Turkish daily Hurriyet last Saturday boasting that the Greek Cypriots had to pay 11 million Turkish lira to the occupied areas.

Tsouloftas made it clear that the EAC did not have an agreement with the Turkish Cypriot company but with KEVE and Mavrommatis.

“We handed over the amount last Thursday and according to our information, the following day, in other words Friday, Mr Mavrommatis submitted the sum to its beneficiaries,” he said.

The acting spokesman said the agreement between KEVE and the EAC terminated at the end of the month but that some negotiations had taken place to extend it, without anything having yet been signed.
