Women stabbed to death in Turkey

19 August 2011 11:38am

Two women from Northern Ireland have been stabbed to death in Turkey.

The middle-aged women, believed to be from Co Down, were murdered late on Thursday night in the city of Izmir, about 75 miles from the resort of Kusadasi.

A 17-year-old Turkish youth, understood to be the boyfriend of a daughter of one of the women, has been arrested.

It is believed he has confessed to the attack.

Irish diplomats are liaising with relatives of the two women.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin confirmed consular staff are trying to track down family members.

"We are providing consular assistance through the embassy in Ankara," said the spokesman.

The two women were travelling on Irish passports.

It is understood one of the women owns a property in the Kusadasi area and the two women had travelled into Izmir, where they were attacked.

The 'girl friend' was only 15 years of age, no wonder the now dead Mother said "NO"! What's wrong with these people! All very sad and tragic.

This is very sad event, but I think there must be more in this story then a broken teenage heart.

This is a terrible incident and really awful for the family. But Turkey is still pretty safe it terms of murder or violent crime. True its headline news in the UK, surprise surprise and you will get the usual xenophobic stuff. But yesterday three people were shot in a hairdressers ' http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/2011/08/20/hunt-on-for-gunman-after-shooting-in-city-hair-salon-91466-29270327/'

Crime happens everywhere as awful as it is.

Phil, do you perceive the anti-Turkish propaganda machine working overtime?

The deaths are very sad and what lay behind it is obviously of interest but are they trying to give the impression that Turkey is a dangerous destination off the back of this isolated tragic event?

Or is it just lack of sensational news elsewhere?

Maybe the mentality "they have had a good sex education - so let them get on with it" has something to do with it!

My daughter did not get to meet boys after she was 18, and by then she was mature enough not to be foolish. The first boy she liked, she was promised to and then got engaged and married (living happily ever after). The same applies (or at least applied to) many other TC girls living in Cyprus - bar the exceptions of course.

What is even worse is that it's reported that they were in a relationship for 2 years. Apparently they had all shared a villa in May which was rented by the boy. The mother was also married to a Turk, but they had separated.

It was doubly sad for the former husband of her friend Kathy Dinsmore, his second wife died suddenly on the same day.
