Having recently gone for 2mb from Nethouse things seem no different from when I was on 1mb.

How can I check I'm getting what I'm paying for?

Hi newscoop,

I think you can only get the increased download speed if you have the new Motorola Dish fitted.

Mine has not been replaced yet, so stuck with 1MB @ 95 Tl per month :-(

Signed up with Nethouse about eight months ago after having had very bad service and support from both Extend and their agent Arriva, never got the 1mbps download speed I was paying for and had considerable downtime.

Nethouse have been excellent, I am now getting at least the 2mbps I am paying for and with little downtime.

TBB meter is another useful speed checker.

What you are purchasing is mega bits per second, not mega bytes (note the difference in spelling).

There are 8 mega bits to 1 mega byte, when you do the download test you should see around 1 for 1 mega bit connection and 2 for a 2 mega bit connection, upload is normally half of download.

When you are using a download engine or a torrent site, they normally show megabytes on the download and upload speeds so if you have a 2 mega bit connection toy should see at maximum speed a download of 250 kilobytes/second (2 megabits/8) but you should bear in mind the upload speed of wherever you are downloading froms network.

In easiest terms I can put to help:

1 megabit download is 125 kilobytes/sec - 500 kilobits upload is 67.5 kilobytes/sec

for 2 meg multiply by 2

for 4 meg multiply by 4

At peak times and weekends, don't expect to see this constantly as the base stations is limited

I hope this helps

Ping is a computer network administration utility used to test the reachability of a host on an Internet Protocol (IP) network and to measure the round-trip time for messages sent from the originating host to a destination computer. The name comes from active sonar terminology.

That's what ping means.

Just done it on Navek's link;

Down 1.92...up 0.52

Then on speedtest.net;

Ping 191...Down 2.39...Up 0.54.

Still on original non motorola box.

the ping is the measurement of time to how long the data burst takes to get from where it is leaving to where it is going. Due to the fact that we are using wdsl (wireless digital subscriber line) there are many reasons that will slow the ping down but this will only really affect high quality online gaming systems and at 351 ms not by much. 250ms ping is the prefered maximum limit for online gaming but it can still work if slower.

I am pretty sure you are not gaming though so the concern would be the download speed limits.

The numbers you are showing would indicate that the server system has been dragged down, I can only guess at the cause of this but if I saw that I would assume it is because my daughter is downloading her usual doen or so movies and TV shows for the week ahead and is actually doing it at night as requested so it does not slow down the server when I am using it for my stuff

I don't know the actual limits but if the base station was restricted to (cont.)

100 mbps and there were 50 users they could get 2mbps each but if you double it to 100 users and they all want max speed they would be restricted to 1mbps.

those speeds look pretty good newscoop but are they testing from the same point.

Try selecting london as your test point instead of ankara as there will be different availabilities at each point. The speed test systems online are as simple as possible to make them user friendly and fast operating to keep people like us interested in using them

I have a 2mbps connection through nethouse and just tested to london

I got 190ms ping 1.24 mbps down and 0.18 up

Then I tested it on auto and it managed a 10ms ping but still only 1.52 down and .20 up

much faster to get here but not really much faster to transfer

But tobe honest, for a Saturday morning I can accept that. I know there are those out there who would say, I am paying for 2 and I want 2 but I am afraid that you are unlikely to get that with this system unless you do speedtests at 3am
