It is all to do with wattage requirement, I would estimate that a 12k BTU ac unit even on economy setting would be using around 1 kwatt/hour which is roughly 3 lira over a 10 hour period.

A fan uses approximately 50 watts so 2 fans would be 100 watts/hour so 1 kwatt over the same 10 hours which is roughly 0.3 lira.

These are all very rough estimates but essentially, in your case the ac unit is costing 10 times the fans power consumption.

If you really want an accurate answer I would need the model of AC and fans.

In simple terms, it is like everything else in North Cyprus, if you can afford the price of a comfortable life, use the ac, if you want to be economical, use the cheap version.

It's more to do with the fact that Fans only move the air,A/c cools the air, unless your fan can access cooler air you will stay hot..Some fans have evaporators which moisten the air ,but with the humidity as high as it is ,no use here at all...

Pay to stay cool, or don't and stay hot...

See http://www.cyprusnow.info/iewtopic.php?f=7&t=89 on how to reduce your AC costs.

I use air con in the bedroom only. Only need to use it all night mid July to mid Sept , other summer months b just l0 mins to cool the room down.

Air con has the advantage that for winter it is the cheapest form of ELECTRIC heating , which is safest for a bedroom.

One of my rooms has an overhead fan and that is definitely next best to air con - I am not sure about comparative cost but you do need the right kind of ceiling structure to carry the weight - I have wooden beams.

We haven't used our air con at all, just the ceiling fan and it works out fine. Have just been in Turkey for a week and we just used the fan on the air con unit and sometimes had to turn it off because we felt chilly!

I agree with Proger above that a fan consumes electricity about a tenth of a 12 BTU A/C. We have a well insulated house and we managed all summer with a single fan in the bedroom. A/C is handy for safe heating in the winter.

I will be a little pedantic and talk about electrical units. A fan draws about 50 watts. That is the instantenious power. In one hour it consumes 50 watt hour or 0.05 KWh i.e. 50 Wh since 1 KW=1000W

I use my 9000btu air con unit in my bedroom every evening for a couple of hours then close it and use a fan all night. I have a ceiling fan downstairs which is on most of the day. Also normal electrical appliances are on and my last bill was 70ytl for a month.

The original question was "which is more economical?"

Without doubt a/c is more economical in that it does more cooling for the electricity used than a fan, which only cools by evaporation, whereas a/c cools by refrigeration.
