We watched them doing a practice over our house in North Wales last week that is such a shame.

An RAF Red Arrows pilot died when his plane crashed following a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival in Dorset.

Flt Lt Jon Egging, 33, from Rutland, was killed when his Hawk T1 aircraft - Red 4 - crashed about 1km south east of Bournemouth Airport at 13:50 BST.

Eyewitnesses described seeing the plane plunge to the ground in a field near the River Stour at Throop village.

It was one of nine Red Arrows aircraft that had earlier taken part in a display over the seafront.

'He will be missed'

In a statement his wife, Dr Emma Egging, described her husband as "an exemplary pilot" and said watching him during the display was the "proudest" she had ever been.

So sad. I have always loved the Red Arrows. My Dad was a pilot and I always used to badger him into trying to join the Reds! Witnessing the roar and thrill of them flying over you is unforgettable. RIP Flt Lt Egging x

This indeed is a very sad accident and my best wishes go to the family and his fellow pilots, I was an aircraft Airframe/Engine technician in the military and during 2007/8 I actually was involved in the servicing of the Red Arrows in S Wales.

The hawk used as a trainer and for the arrows has previously had an excellent safety record and can only think this accident was due to a very rare technical fault which unfortunately (by the sound of eye witnesses) caused by what they described! the loss of engine power? the MOD will have already instructed a thorough investigation into this tragic accident and it would not surprise me if they grounded the rest of the fleet as a safety measure, RIP Flt Lt Egging.

My wife and I were lucky enough to share dinner and a raucous night out with half of the Red Arrows plus wives / girlfriends at Effendis last Easter when they were pre-season traing down south - Jon was not amongst them that night but I can say the others that are still with the team this year will be devastated. Fantastic guys (and gal) and I'm sure that the late Jon Egging and his family would want the team to be airborne doing what they do best as soon as possible.
