Pity they can't be bothered to collect all the outstanding builders taxes owed. A far more lucrative market.

The 2 women from the tax office stopped and spoke to a few stall-holders, asking if they were giving receipts etc.

They also had the

time to try a dress on from one stall !!! Not sure if they bought it or not.

Does anyone know what they can actually do, when there are approx 100 stalls at Lambousa.....can they arrest or fine people ???

The wed market stall-holders don't give receipts, nor the stalls at the harbour.

Can they close it down ???

metin;

"The wed market stall-holders don't give receipts, nor the stalls at the harbour."

Thats a comletely different matter. They have a bussiness/company registered in their name.As much as they don't give receipts for the sales they make, they have to convince the tax man when they have their accounts done.Same as walking into a minimarket and seing the person calculating customers bill with a little calculator and not on the till, which is not much different then what goes on in uk.

The stalls at the harbour has to obtain license from girne belediye, which comes at a cost regardless you sell anything or not.

I personnaly do not think they can do much as long as you are selling second hand goods.

Re Msg 4: It's not a completely different matter at all. In fact it's entirely the same . Many of the stallholders at Lambousa are registered with the tax authorities and as such it is entirely the same regarding their accounts.

What is in question is the sale of second-hand and cottage-produce and household clearance. We are looking into the matter.

msg 9;You are not realy saying anything that is different then my comments re msg 4.I still beleive there is not much that can be done towards second hand stools, providing they are not doing it for a living. And as far as the registered stools are concerned..........well,they have nothing to worry.Simple,no need to make an issue out of it at all.

As an ex nurse I found msg 10 very amusing......I think it should be read as "second hand stalls". Please don't think I am being critical here Yorgozlu, I know very well that your English is much better than my Turkish but it DID make me smile !

A taxi driver, having just dropped off his pasenger, suddenly smelled something rather unsavoury - the stink seemed to be coming from the rear seat. He glanced back and at once recognised it as a 'second-hand stool' - yes, there it was, fuming and glistening in the moonlight.

The taxi driver immediately drove to the nearest police station and sat outside with his horn blaring.

Within seconds, several police officers came running out to see what the commotion was all about.

'Sergeant, Seargent', moaned the taxi driver, 'someone has left a 'second-hand stool' on my back seat - what shall I do?'

'Well', replied the sergeant, scratching his chin, 'I'll tell you what to do with it - keep it for three months, and if after such time nobody claims it, you can keep it!'

Much as it erks me to go off topic, I can't resist this one...... My chemistry master at grammar school would often say " Boys..... please bring your stools to the front.... I have something to show you".... he never got the joke as we all giggled helplessly.

Those that don't pay taxes or get paid for providing a taxi service on the side should keep their snout out and head down. Lillian and many others have you Sussed. A few lira for a map or the odd homemade cake is one thing but thousands of lira per year
